contest judges

I think it depends on whether or not it’s nyyl sanctioned. Generally they’re gonna try to get experienced judges.

being a little more specific, is there enything that one has to do to become a judge other than just saying they are an experienced judge.

Judges are typically experienced yo-yo players and community members who are very familiar with how the judging system works and can fairly assess the performances in front of them. Of course “who judges” is going to vary depending on the contest location, but if it’s a NYYL sanctioned contest they’ll all be using the same judging format. What makes you think any of the judges you have seen have “minimal experience”?

Like YoYoExpert Garrett says:

Most areas (states/regions) that are organized enough to sponsor a nyyl state or regional contest have people in the area that are recognized as knowledgeable, qualified people. These people are generally well known in the region and probably familiar to the organizers. They may even be part of the organizing group. At times regions will bring in recognized experts from outside the region. That has been my experience.

On a purely local basis this may not be the case.
