I give a lot of yo-yos away.. I bring extras to events and places we go regularly. When I spy a likely candidate, first I ask them if they know yo-yo. The word. The item.
I gotta find out if they are a yo-yo person.

If they don’t, I proceed to demo and see how into it they are. Depends on the person. Some adults are like “this is kid stuff”, it’s as if they forgot how to enjoy life. Well whatever, man!

If they do… this is where it get magical. I get the gift yo-yo out, and I watch their face closely as I reveal it. Those who truly remember yo-yo, the joy of play is written all over their face.. it’s unmistakable, that moment, and I savor what’s about to happen

One guy recently was like, I get to keep this? Are you sure? I don’t deserve this. And he was good! Really good! Like in the top 5% of people I give yo-yos to! He was doing a lot of the basic responsive moves, as if he had never stopped playing. Still, even as I was leaving, he tried to return it to me, even though I told him multiple times I brought it to give away and I wanted him to have it. Finally I said:
No man, you do deserve this. Look how good you are with it! I am giving it to you. I don’t want it back. What I want is for you to have fun with this yo-yo and your reflected joy is worth so much more than this yo-yo to me. Mandatory fun!
He had a kid, and I told him I’d come back with another for his son. I’ve been so busy, but I need to do that. I promised him. This is a good reminder.
Now, what I didn’t tell him is that every day I find myself looking for a reason to be alive. And that interaction – what we said to each other, how we made each other feel, the way we will always remember that moment – is a reason to be alive. And now I’m sharing it with all of you, because happiness is only real when shared.
TL;DR this is my long winded way of saying ALL yo-yo people are my favorites. At least on this forum, the “favorite user” feature would be redundant. ![]()
