The material much more expensive to obtain than 6061 or 7075

What is the reason for that…if not rarity? Why so costly?

Rarity is part of it. I suppose refining it is also harder and more expensive. As far as machining the bar of TI, that is not much of the reason for the increased price.

Okay, thanks Jake, I think you are right. I was doing some more reading, and apparently Titanium is a lot harder to refine than something like Aluminum, or Iron. In addition, many articles state that Titanium is extremely hard and laborious to extract from its various ores.

As a question to you, Jake, or anyone who knows of the machining process, exactly how hard is it to machine Titanium? Is it more time consuming than something like Aluminum?

Much more time to machine than aluminum, as you have to remove a much thinner amount of material with every rotation of the tool or workpiece. Don’t forget that, in manufacturing processes, time is money. Also, the cost of long-life tool bits is substantially more than what you can get away with cutting aluminum. More machining time + more expensive and/or more cutting tools equates to higher manufacturing costs, even without taking into account the additional costs associated with titanium stock, compared to aluminums…

The reasoning isn’t exactly this. He is probably by no means saying that the company sucks if it does not push the boundaries with ti. But if you think about it why would they make it out of ti if they weren’t doing anything with this materials properties. I guarantee that if they did do what is possible with ti it would have rather thin walls and a large amount of rim weight. They want to see if they used titanium for a reason.

Btw I have nothing against yyf they make the majority of the throws in my collection and my favorites throw.

It’s exotic, it’s more durable, it sparks and it shines. That’s why I bought it.

I’m glad you asked. I know of at least one off the top of my head.

Here is the cross section from the One Drop Sovereign:

 ![](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/b/7/f/b7fa93bd1951a5c567c0b8d91a0b4699bd32aa84.jpeg)

See how thin those walls are?? .02 inches or .5mm

That is making use of Ti properties.

I have to say, that the Ricochet arrived today. I was expecting nothing more than a good titanium throw from YoyoFactory. To my surprise, I cannot believe I have not seen a ton of rave reviews about this yo-yo. I was actually shocked at how great it is. Stickman said I would be happy with the Ricochet, but he downplayed it to be safe I guess, because I am more than happy with it.

I was happy to get #004. I have to buy a double now, because how can you possibly scratch up #4. Not going to happen folks, so I will be buying a second one of these by next week. Besides, my other Tis have a twin, so the Ricochet shall not be the odd Ti out. I saw the box, which is that much more impressive in person. I made a long post about yo-yo packaging, and gave YoyoFactory top honors in that category…and here is why. This is how you present yourself to someone who just paid over $150 for a nice yo-yo. The case will apparently be released with other yo-yos, and they are made to interlock, as a collectible accessory:

[Ricochet2](http://www.flickr.com/photos/totalartist/9242628228/) by [The TotalArtist](http://www.flickr.com/people/totalartist/), on Flickr

Opening was easy, took off a few sticky tabs and lifted the top off the box. Inside, on one side of the box…on the right, was a little baggie, containing strings, a bearing, an awesome transluscent/blue multitool and the usual YoyoFactory manual:

[Ricochet4](http://www.flickr.com/photos/totalartist/9242612190/) by [The TotalArtist](http://www.flickr.com/people/totalartist/), on Flickr

Then, out came the yo-yo… This is the shiniest yo-yo I have ever seen. I thought he sent them all to yoyospirit…but I could not photograph this yo-yo without capturing something from the surroundings, in the mirror surface of the yo-yo. It is incredibly shiny, almost like a piece of jewelry, and the presentation in that box is top notch. This yo-yo is shinier than my 9.06 was out of the box, and that cost more than twice the price. The packaging is different, but equally classy in presentation:

[Ricochetb](http://www.flickr.com/photos/totalartist/9239811789/) by [The TotalArtist](http://www.flickr.com/people/totalartist/), on Flickr

The surprising thing also, is that the Ricochet is nothing in appearance or play like the other titaniums I have. It looks and feels nothing like the Sovereign. The Sovereign to me was way too light. You all know I prefer heavier throws. The Ricochet, when it sits in your hand, it just feels solid. I knew I was going to love it before I threw it. When I threw it, I was amazed, because it has weight to it, and a solid feel, without being heavy. It has a nice feel when it cuts through the air, solid yet aerodynamic. I was also surprised because it is a stable undersized yo-yo. I just could not believe how incredibly good and smooth this yo-yo is. I am no reviewer, but this is the best yo-yo I have purchased so far since the first of the year. I am so impressed with it. I want to show you how different the Ricochet is from the other two titaniums I have. Forgive the fingerprints…

[TiFamily](http://www.flickr.com/photos/totalartist/9239805385/) by [The TotalArtist](http://www.flickr.com/people/totalartist/), on Flickr

I was utterly shocked at how good this yo-yo is, and wonder why it took me so long to buy it. I got an unbelievable titanium yo-yo, for less than $160 during the July 4th sale. The package presentation, the way it plays, and the extras included (case, string, bearing, multitool), made this yo-yo more than worth it. I would have paid $250 for this yo-yo…easy. I just do not know how YoyoFactory will make a profit off this yo-yo. It seems too much is offered for such a small price. This is a beautiful yo-yo, and you may need to buy two of them if you plan to spark it. I will be buying a second one of these. And, I hope YoyoFactory makes another titanium design in the future. They knocked the ball out of the park. This is a yo-yo a lot of people can be happy with, and YoyoFactory may be the first to put titanium in the hands of 1000 people in one run, who could not afford titanium before. They offer you the added accessories, the color option, and the ability to save up before these run out (likely this Fall). With 1000 pieces, one of them can easily be yours ;D

Oh, I will be getting another raw one. I just love the look of it so much…the second will be identical. Thanks for reading. Congratulations to YoyoFactory on an amazing yo-yo. I keep saying that Ben’s marketing is brilliant, but it now makes sense why he started the thread…he knows it is a great yo-yo. You have seen who is on his contest team, so if this yo-yo was anything less, it would have gone back to the drawing board. I bet everyone at YoyoFactory is excited about this great yo-yo. I’m very, very impressed. Exceeded my expectations…but did not exceed my wallet. 🙂

Just a note for those concerned about cross sections. Part of the brilliance at YoyoFactory, had to be less of an obsession about having something to prove with the insides of the yo-yo. There seemed more an obsession with whether the titanium yo-yo was going to look great, play great, give people their money’s worth, and appeal to many. This yo-yo certainly delivers…looks great, and plays great plus a lot more. I got three other throws in the mail, and have not touched any of them yet.

Props to YoyoFactory…mission accomplished.

It’s both. Definitely WAY more expensive than aluminum and it is more difficult and timely to machine.

That is exactly what I meant. If you are just throwing titanium at it to say it is titanium then yipee… you just wasted titanium.

Exotic means nothing, it is quite durable but then so is 7075 aluminum, and I can get a raw aluminum to shine just as bright as titanium… so can several others on this board.

> Hrm, so you don’t ask the car factory owner directly? You ask the dealership vendor who is paid commission to sell you the car? And he would never cut a cross section for you, would he? He’d just direct you the specs given by the factory. Go ask Andre (the dealership) for this reasonable request before deciding if you’re going to buy it or not, then go say he’s a bad vendor because he will clearly say no….
>
> …You clearly don’t know how much manual labor goes into making a Ferrari engine. A Ferrari “shell” with a ford engine is not a Ferrari. A titanium yoyo is a titanium yoyo as long as it’s made out of titanium, period.

Actually a dealership is a representative of the manufacturer and has the literature given to them by the manufacturer. Also if the mechanic is a manufacturer certified mechanic then they are trained to specifically deal with the automobile in question. I would never go to “Bob’s Discount Car Palace” and expect to talk to the manufacturer.

And you do know what they say when you “assume”. I am quite familiar with the inner workings of Ferraris and what all goes into making one. My analogy still stands. If the Ricochet is made with aluminum design theory and the design is not pushing the titanium then it might as well be an aluminum, no matter how pretty, shiny or exotic it may be. Just like a Ferrari with a Ford engine.

The thing about me is, you guys see my collection in my signature. I buy a lot of companies throws, and I like them all to be honest. Every time I post in the “favorite manufacturer” threads, I tell you that I don’t really have one…it would be several. If the yo-yo was just “good,” I’d tell you it’s good, but it really is a very special yo-yo. I enjoy it so far as much as the 9.06 and I paid more than twice as much for that one. The beauty of it is, YoyoFactory made something different than what was out there. It does not appear to be at first glance, but if you throw a few others, you will feel the difference. I enjoy all my Tis, but that one is the perfect little brother to the 9.06. I like heavier throws, so the 9.06 has weight, and it needed an undersized counterpart. Yoyofactory added variety to the list of Titaniums out there. It is utterly brilliant…cost effective, appeal to many, color options, looks great, the shine is impeccable, accessories included, released 1000 of them into the wild, and he filled a void the other Tis had not filled. This one is different. If you have other titaniums, you should have this one too. Again, I don’t have a “favorite” manufacturer…but I give credit where credit is due. I posted in here to give some “balance” to the discussion to the extent I thought it was fair. But, the yo-yo is excellent…seriously.

Whatever the guy’s name is at Yoyofactory doing the art and design…props to him too. I saw his name in a YoyoFactory product book. Not sure if he is still doing the work…but everything they churn out is looking fantastic from a design perspective. That packaging is awesome.

Means nothing to you, to me it means a lot. Go buy your wife a gold plated ring instead of a 28k gold and say that it’s the same to her, tell her they look the same.

Again, to you. Does aluminum spark? Is aluminum considered an exotic metal? How many titanium things do you have in life? Even if the ricochet was a titanium run of a aluminum model, WHICH IS NOT, I’d still find it worthy of my money.
If you want to be cheap, plastic yoyos are more than good enough for your needs, so why buy a metal yoyo which costs way more?

Great review, I agree with everything you said with the exception of the packaging. While I think this new packaging is a way better than pretty much everything else out there, it still could be much better. What holds the yoyo in place inside the box is till a plastic cardboard, which doesn’t even accept the stringed yoyo.
The coolest packaging I’ve seen so far, is by far the Walter package, a cool looking wooden box that fits the yoyo snugly.

Hard to argue with this. If you get your wife a 28k gold ring, that would be an exotic metal.

Bla bla bla… Thank you!!!

So you bought it because it was titanium and was then pleased to realize the play was there as well D:
Sorry but not all of us have $160 to chuck at a yoyo just because its titanium, if we wanted play we would just buy a used chief or something!
To me it just seems like it was a bonus to you that it played well
Pls. keep your language appropriate. To include abbreviations or anythin’ inferred. Thanks.
