I would like to start a thread were we all give recommendations of throws based off other popular/ well known yoyos…
Take a yoyo and recommend something that someone else might also like to try. It doesnt necessarily need to be similar in all ways but in a way that has some relative correlation. Something maybe older or unknown or not talked about a lot.
For example:
I really like the OD Aitch. Its fast and stable and surprisingly comfortable in the hand. And think the OD SK is worth a try! Its also fast and has the same feeling on the string. Its completely different on paper, a hard H vs a hard V, a little wider and bigger and 2 grams heavier! But the shape makes it a quick and stable throw and feels similar moving around. I think if you like the aitch i think you will also enjoy the SK!

I also want to add to your post, if you like the Aitch, buy an American. I loved the Aitch, but the American is so good that it’s insane. Similar H shape but rounded rims bring comfort. Wider causes more stability, which the Aitch is already stable.

I want to try a shutter at some point. There’s so many different flavors of it between the vanilla Shutter, Wide Angle, Shu-ta, Steel, Ti, Ti Wide Angle, Bi-metal, American, and Expedition. Maybe there’s even more that I’m unaware of. It seems like a great yoyo that I’d enjoy. There’s just way too much choice paralysis involved to pick one to get lol.
I feel like just a vanilla Shutter would probably be the best pick, but the Expedition coming with snow tires is a pretty tempting selling point for me…

The JDS Shutter is top notch and probably the best of the series. Definitely the best one I’ve tried anyway

I disagree, the SK is nothing like the Aitch in my experience. It plays much more reluctantly and moves much slower than the Aitch due to it being about 2 grams heavier. It feels more solid and weighty on the string, but doesn’t feel as powerful or as stable as the Aitch thanks to its V shape. I would not describe the SK as quick and nimble, I consider it slow paced and chilled out with that solid feeling on the string, similar to a heavy organic yoyo of sorts. It is the only SF yoyo that doesn’t play like an SF, if you catch my drift, which could be why it never took off.

I’ve got most of them… start with the JDS Shutter. Butter is my all time favorite though. TiShutter plays out of this world too.

Sure. If you’re looking for something similar to the OneDrop Aitch, the very popular 7075 Mowl Surveillance is a great choice, though it’s much more difficult to obtain and is much more expensive than the Aitch. It has the balance of power and agility that the Aitch has, though it is not as nimble as the Aitch. The Surveillance feels more powerful on the string due to it being a bimetal and is also more stable that the Aitch. It is one of the few H-shapes that don’t play reluctant, weighty and very solid on the string. Its shape could be more appealing to non H shape enthusiasts since it’s a much softer H than the Aitch. Honestly, I think there’s not much else I need to say about the Mowl Surveillance, it’s popularity kinda speaks for itself.
For a less obvious and underrated recommendation, I’ll recommend the Old School Throws Resto if you’re looking for a bimetal slimline that is very pocketable and very stable or are looking for another yoyo similar to the Dressel Designs Kanto. It’s pretty hard to obtain one, but it’s a yoyo that inspired the Kanto and can match up to it. It’s stability was unmatched by all other slimlines when it was released, and yet it plays light and agile on the string, being only 56g! It is also one of the most stable light yoyos out there, more stable than the Author, the GBP (which is bimetal by the way), Dressel Designs Assassin and the 44. An excellent pick if you need a very stable pocketable yoyo that doesn’t play like a brick and can handle everything you throw at it. So if you want your Kanto to be more pocketable and play lighter and more agile on the string, consider finding a Resto on the BST.

You should try one. I bought a regular shutter off someone. Plenty of them are available secondhand making them cheap. And they’re simply a very good throw.
My regular shutter has me eyeing a JDS one now since they’re supposed to be the best iteration of the shutter.

Both sound good. It can be any recommendation, doesnt need to be based off the aitch. Just something you think deserves more attention or that is really good but not well known or anything.

Ah I see. Well the second recommendation of the Old School Throws Resto is one people should really check out, especially considering how many people love the Kanto. I think Old School Throws in general is pretty underrated, they make yoyos that look really clean and minimalistic and pretty much all of their yoyos have organic shapes, which is what a lot of people here seem to like, but I never see their throws being brought up here. I hope to get myself a Medallion one day.

I had a Confluence and I didn’t like it. That’s why I never mention it. Undersized yet powerful organic just isn’t a description that appeals to me.
That being said if the Atmos Goji or Stormberry are things you enjoy. Imagine taking the power and stability of the Stormberry, then packing it into the wide, undersized body of the Goji. That’s the Old School Throws Confluence.

I see, maybe their older yo-yos like the Quint or the VIIX would appeal to you. They have an A-RT vibe to the design and are traditional organic yo-yos. Those are tough to find though.

I dont dislike my regular shutters at all, but Im not crazy about them in general. I LOVE my JDS shutter though

oh yeah that’s what I mean. I quite like my shutter ( I’ve only had it for a week). But considering the rave reviews about the JDS version kind of has me on the edge of buying one.

It’s crazy how two yoyos can have nearly the same shape and dimensions and feel so different. The Rev 1 is kinda like Topdeck Lite. The weight is .2 grams lighter and more evenly distributed, which gives it an overall lighter feeling, compared to it’s rim-heavy counterpart. The edges are also rounded out, which makes it a little more comfortable on the catch. Topdeck is still a better performer, but the Rev ain’t no slouch either.
If you’re looking for a Topdeck and you see a Rev, consider giving it a try.
