On butterfly yoyos I mainly use cotton, though I occasionally use slick 6. On my loopers I mostly use slick 8. I like the cotton, but the slick 8 plays well and is far more durable.

I actually got a pack of slick 6 and a pack of slick 8 last weekend. I plan on trying them on a fixed axle in the next month. Right now, I’m doing some string testing/reviewing but next month it’s fixed axle all month long.

This is a real newbie question that I should know by now, but how do I figure out what type of cotton strings I have? All my packs are generic 100% cotton, but I have no idea what type. Cut the string and count strands?

I believe most commonly available cotton is 8 strand, though there is some 10 strand around. I’ve never heard of 6 strand cotton. Cut and count is the only reliable answer.

Yup. Type 8 or type 6 are almost certain.
Either you’ve got two twisted strands of 4 tiny strands (4x2)
Or two twisted strands of 3 tiny strands (3x2).
If you spend a lot of time KNOWING what you’re using, you can tell on a throw.

@StillinKansasCity, Just found this thread and I love it. In regards to your knots try a dental pick. I carry one around it takes up no space in my pocket.

I also herd a telephone pick works well. its like little wire on the end of a plastic handle.

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I’ll always prefer my bobby pins. The metal construction allows the toughest knots to be pulled with ease.

The tea stain developed a lovely darker brown (but not too dark) for the yoyo… the only caveat would be that it seemed to dissolve the glue holding the brown “nubs” over the axle nuts.
I’d have some gorilla glue handy when you pull the yo-yo out after a few hours of sitting in hot tea. :wink:

My Irving Pro uses a 1 inch long axle. It has a diameter of 1/8 inches. I’m not sure If the Irving uses the same length. My Baldwin uses a shorter axle, but I can’t unthread it because the hex-side wont loosen from the half. I would assume the Irving is shorter. Hopefully someone else can help you.
In other news, anyone see the Ash and Walnut Baldwins on TMBR’s facebook? Looking good!

Probably the best solution is to get a dowel of the proper diameter, cut it to an inch or so and see how the gap looks. Maybe someone here can use a feeler gauge to measure the gap and post it.

Gah. Why do companies put out such limited runs of super cool stuff? I will be tremendously disappointed if I miss out.
