Correct, Jeff defined the “response H” on May 14. :joy:

Maybe Jeff’s newly designated shape should be called the cH shape, (CodingHorror shape), since he’s 99.99% of the one’s in favor of a new designation.

I think letter shapes are kinda silly (particularly H and W), especially since there actually are some groups of yoyo that have a lot in common despite technically falling under a few different shapes. I’m mainly thinking of a particular set of Japanese style yoyos (YYR Sleipnir, TP positron, TP Basilisk, UNPRLD Abduction, Aceyo Gravitation) - these might fall under one category or another based on the inside profile, but all kinda share a particular feel.

I guess O and V are specific enough that they can stay, but H and W tend to be used as catchall terms for ‘everything else’ and people fit them to cover too many shapes to be useful in the slightest.

I’d agree with that, though H is farrrrr tougher to interpret than W, which is basically “V, but with one additional deviation in angle”

Yeah, in order for a V to become a W, it has to have “wings” at the rims. If the rims aren’t projected out far enough, they aren’t really wings, and so not really a W.

So moving this away from a “what constitutes an h shape,” and back to the original question, I think outside of 5A there’s no significant benefit to an h shape over v, w, or bell.

If you look at the Shutter compared to the Genesis (which to me seems like a heavy influence on the Shutter), one of the big changes is reducing the flare of the rim and angling it down towards the gap to make more of a v shape, widening the catch zone. Which makes complete sense.

But that doesn’t matter as much in 5A and I think having that h shape lends itself well to 5A needs like stability and keeping the string moving in the direction you want while it’s being manipulated by the momentum of the counterweight.

Really? I never understood it had to be organically curved to be an H shape. On the contrary, my understanding was that it was similar to the W shape, but with harder angles, closer to 90°, heavily rim weighted and wider gap, but over time the H shape evolved to include organic curves. One thing I do when I engage in a new interest is to research it, prolly so I don’t appear to be too horribly ignorant. I wish I could remember how I came upon my understanding versus yours. Guess I’ll be doing more research today. So, where does one go to find such definitive descriptions of the shape of yoyos anyway? Obviously my sources weren’t quite accurate.
Edit: Per a competitor’s site, “Yo-Yo names and shapes are far from standardized, every place may have its own vocabulary to describe yo-yos, and makers have their own terminology as well.”
Well that explains a lot!
