Large gap, flush/recessed response, bearing quality, how empty the bearing is (lube/gunk)…Those are the main things.

It’s a combination of the amount of oil in the bearing and how much grip the response system has. The gap size also plays a role. I have found that the amount of oil in the bearing affects how quickly the yo-yo will wind up and the amount of grip the response system gives determines how tightly the string winds up.
