Opinion here:
I do not trust specs anymore to decide if i like yoyos. I’ve tried yoyos with specs and shapes completely opposite to what i think i like and i’ve always beed surprised. I’ve got yoyos and went “yuck, i won’t like this”, then i throw it and like it.
As a result, i never have a prejudice about any yoyo about how it will play just based on specs/shape.
It is never until i play it that i can decide if i like it or not.

I enjoy the big fun a lot. Yeah there’s some vibe but it’s a monster on the string for a molded plastic

G2 Ghost. It’s fun, and I can play with it, but i was kinda hoping it to be mindblowing but it just wasn’t. It’s still fun tho.
Also, the magicyoyo GHZ (the only looper they have). I’m convinced that yoyo is the worst yoyo in existence and i wish i never had the misfortune to ever buy one.

I felt this way about Duncan’s cheapo Yomega brain knockoff.
I bought one for my four year old at Walmart one time just to see if he could have any fun with it. I feel like it is a legitimate threat to the future of this hobby having it sold had a big chain store like that.
Like, how many kids hounded their parents to buy them one of those, and then they got it, and then it’s just literally the worst yoyo in existence, therefore leading them to never advance in their skill set.
I went full-blown Dylan Kowalski on that bad boy 🤣

what someone needs to do is walk into walmart, ask the closest staff,
“hey im looking for a yoyo for my son, but it needs to be able to do this (do magic trick) and this (do spirit bomb) and this (do some horizontal)” and see the store person’s reaction.

String choice is more important than yoyo choice. All yoyos are good, but not all strings are. I often find myself playing my yoyos not based on how they play according to their design/specs, but rather if the string is fun to play with and is a good match for the yoyo.

I don’t agree with this at all :joy: There’s a reason so many pros don’t really care what string they use and have just been using the same old kitty fat they’ve always used the past 5-10+ years. I bet there’s a ton of pros that don’t even bother with trying different types of strings. What they currently have and have always used is good enough for them.

I don’t know if I would say string choice is _more_ important, but I would definitely say that string choice is _equally_ as important.

Pros do care about what they use. Kitty is actually perfectly fine string lol. I bet pros who use kitty would think twice about trying anything else.

It is fine string. That’s why pros use it. Is it the best string? No. Do they care enough to even think about whether they are? No. Do they need it? No.
I’ve heard multiple times experienced players saying stuff like “kitty’s the only thing I’ve ever used for years” and even a few times of people who are sponsored by boutique string companies saying stuff like “this stuff(the boutique string they’re sponsored by) is the best I’ve ever used, before I only ever used kitty(or some even just say standard/bulk poly, or it just didn’t matter to them)” an example that comes to my head is Eric Koloski. I also believe Evan Nagao and Dan Dietz had similar quotes too.
I’d be interested to hear from all the people from kitty websites testimonials that are saying “these are the best performing, longest lasting strings I’ve ever used” about what other strings they’ve actually thoroughly tried. I’d bet most of them haven’t really considered trying different types of strings and have just continued to blind buy kitty for years.
Strings not the same as yoyos, you get good at what you get used to even if it’s not exactly the best and if you try something different, especially something significantly different like nylon or markmonts, you won’t be able to do your tricks quite the same for a while until you adjust to them. So for pros strings simply not important enough for them to even experiment around. That’s what I think is the case.
