I 😍 the Silenus, so I went out of my way to get a Mojo because I read it was the exact same yo-yo, except in plastic vs. metal. And then when the Dominator came out, it looked an awful lot like a bimetal Silenus, plus the copy says

> The Dominator inherits the mojo shape re-interpreted with a beautiful bi-metal design

… so I got that too.

**Is it valid to claim that these three yo-yos, the Dominator, Silenus, and Mojo, are functionally “identical” except for the different materials used?**

 ![IMG_6812](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/c/3/2/c32dfd1157f33ff407ed1d3091392133d0a600bc.jpeg) ![IMG_6813](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/7/4/a/74af02649f6d909f8ef082047dd343ec5892514f.jpeg) ![IMG_6814](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/d/f/a/dfa43ef3b191dd85e48aae277ba3635088fecc7f.jpeg)

As you can see in the above pics the overall _shape_ is indeed nearly identical, minus a _tiny_ bit of diameter which you can only see if you stack them next to each other on a table.

Going by the specs, I’m not sure:

| | Weight | Width | Diameter |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dominator | 64g | 46mm | 56mm |
| Silenus | 68g | 47mm | 55mm |
| Mojo | 67g | 47mm | 57mm |

- The most notable item in the specs is that the dominator is perhaps a bit lighter than it should be?

- Clearly the rims are notably different on each, probably due to the materials used – it’s striking how chunky the plastic rims are, less chunky in aluminum, and downright _svelte_ on the bimetal Dominator. I wonder if the slight differences in width and diameter between each three (generally 1mm or less) are related to materials?

- The cup is different in all three as well but is that purely down to materials as well?

There are few other yo-yos we can play this game with, most notably the Skyva?

I like it a lot when companies try out their popular models in different materials. Ones I can think of off the top of my head:

The Chief has had the Pickaxe (a smaller version of the Chief), the Yeti (a plastic version), and a 7075 version Chief.

The Genesis has had special releases in 7075 and a bi-metal.

The Replay Pro, Berserker, and Premiere yoyos all have shapes that have been used multiple times.

There’s the X-Convict and the Eneme, the Hitman and the Lyn Fury.

Then there’s the Dark Magic 1+2, the Legacy 1-3, the Trinity, and even the H3X, all based roughly off the Dark Magic shape.

People sometimes mention the Silenus is a bit heavy though it doesn’t feel that way to me. If you want something like a Silenus but “floatier”, the Dominator is that. It is the Silenus-lite. Part of it is slightly less weight (5 percent?) but also the hand feel because the edges are thinner and more resonant. The Silenus has a huge metal axle as well and I suspect that’s where some of the weight difference is because the dominator has a noticeably shorter axle.

I find it hard to compare plastic and metal because the density of the metal makes it feel so different in hand, but there’s no denying that the Mojo is exactly a plastic Silenus!

Another yoyo set that has a metal & a plastic version is the Joyride / First Base.

Ehhh, NO!!! Due to the materials and their properties they will play differently. Obviously most of you kiddies probably have missed this, but the YYJ Hitman and The Lyn Fury were the same shape, thus looking identical. They should play the same you say… WRONGO. the diifference in materials led to a vast difference in weight distribution and thusly, a vast difference in how they played. Love the HM and to this day dislike the LF. 🕶

The YYJ Dark Magic and the Legacy are further examples. The legacy is an all plastic version of the DM, another fine example of a plastic yoyo with aluminum rings. They also play different from each other even though the Legacy incorporates a steel washer under the caps for added rim weight.

Companies often base shapes of new models off of previous releases. It’s great for explaining the design inspiration and purpose while giving the yo-yo an interesting background story, but doesn’t mean they will play the same.

Fair in case of plastic and bimetals as those are radical differences in material. What about the exact same yoyo shape, down to the millimeter, in 6061 vs. 7075?

For example, I have an AceYo gravitation in 6061 and 7075, best I can tell they are literally the same in every way except the type of aluminum… I need to test it blind and see if I can tell which is which in play without looking at them.

Same weight too? Weight should be slightly different I would think, unless they slightly altered the design to keep specs the same.

Here’s the two AceYo Gravitations, 7075 on the left, 6061 on the right.

 ![IMG_6833](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/d/8/0/d806418aacc9640bbd25d70ef445e8483fbc246e.jpeg)

Weight wise we got **65.2g** for 7075 versus **64.7g** for 6061. I took off the bearing and string to make it as equal as possible, I’m assuming the axle is the same width (I would prefer not to remove as I loctite in the non-hex side on all my throws).

 ![IMG_6832](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/9/e/c/9ec016064b93377772c1cda0a277c24058e7e029.jpeg)

Weight is hard to see in first the pic but it’s there.

So, barely any weight difference, I’d say?

A 0.5g difference isn’t completely insignificant, is it? I mean, yoyo companies make a point of mentioning whenever they shave a gram or two off a model, which means half a gram is a numerically meaningful quantity.

Half a gram isn’t major but it’s definitely noticeable and can make a little difference. When the Summit was being made they actually made a prototype .5g heavier to see which one they liked better.

I also remember David mentioning one time they were testing Paul Dang and he could tell the difference of as little as .02g or something crazy like that

Yeah, .5g is noticeable and it looks like the cup is slightly different too. It may be a very subtle difference, but if you ran through the same tricks a few times on each yoyo you’d probably notice it.

Differing weight is a side effect of trying to get a similar weight distribution with a less-dense & less-strong material. I’d expect a difference like this for any plastic ↔ metal pair of yoyos, and is probably the main reason why they will play so differently.

Identical yoyos with different materials are identical in different ways making them not quite identical while being incredibly different. I would be indifferent to this question but I need to identify my differences to be identical in my perspective to those responses that preceded mine which are identical but yet different. Confused? 🙄

Skyva 6061 and Skyva 7075

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/6/3/a/63a8cf9a66afd9c28a5591325dfd89c0cc8e320d.jpeg)

Per the digital scale, without string (but with bearing and axle) the 6061 is **65.1g** and the 7075 is **66.7g**.

These are _definitely_ identical in shape, cup, everything that I can see. Interestingly these weight numbers are almost exactly what I read on the YoyoRewind store spec pages at 65.1g and 66.8g ⚠

(also question for @YoYoExpertGarrett – do weights usually include bearing and axle? I guess they must since my measurements track the official specs so closely, at least on one yoyo store website? How much variance is there in weight from the same model of yo-yo if you measure say 10 of them? Do you guys weigh & measure the yoyos you get yourself or do you reprint the specs from the manufacturer?)

I guess this is consistent, it’s the second “identical” yoyo pair differing only in material… and the 7075 is a bit heavier in both cases, because it is denser and stronger?

Horizon 6061 vs Horizon Ultra 7068

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/1/5/a/15a6432865fc09b8b207407f3bd61f39dea058fa.jpeg)

6061 is **66.6g** , 7068 is **64.1g** – as usual measured with axle and bearing in place but no string.

That is a bit weird since the shape looks 100% identical to me, and 7068 should be denser and stronger? I’m unclear if stores measure these figures from the actual yoyos they have on hand … ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ says

| | Horizon | Ultra |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weight (g) | 67.6 | 63.2 |
| Diameter (mm) | 58.94 | 59.00 |
| Width (mm) | 42.75 | 42.41 |

That’s a 4.4g difference! I measured only a 2.5g difference (66.6 - 64.1) in the two I have on hand. 😵

Ah yes, you’re right, I see it now. That’s about the only difference I can see. It’s reflected in the corresponding inside edge as well, a slightly more angled bump there on the Ultra.

Still doesn’t explain how yoyorewind would measure nearly twice the weight difference than I did between the two models 😕
