I don’t think I’ve ever done Lunar from 5a. The only 1-handed stall w counterweight I can remember doing is a pinch stall I call “Mars Landing”. It’s over the index so doesn’t take a lot of change-up in position. Kinda like:

hey if i’m used to running 50/50 string on my fixies would I gain any benefits by switching to full cotton? Why is cotton considered the best fixed axle string?

Giving fixie 3a a shot and it’s a lot harder than I was thinking it was going to be. Only hit double trapeze stalls like 1 out of 5 times.

If the axle is made of metal, then cotton may not necessarily be better than poly, just different. But if the axle is wood, and new wood at that, then cotton will have the benefit of not melting due to friction.

At this point, I think it’s merely a matter of preference. Cotton just gives a dependable response, and nice feel/feedback.

If I’m not mistaken, cotton has the disadvantage of not being as durable or long-lasting as poly, right?

This is probably correct, but I just have disliked it so much on wood axles, that I don’t personally know. The exception is the MF Amy mentioned above. It’s not going to last a month, but I probably would have changed cotton 3 or 4 times already. Not sure how much life it has left…

Fixed Axle use sees much more wear on the string then standard 1A so it will def die faster then the time range listed on the shop. I’d guestimate anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks max per string on fixed.

I have never had 50/50 string last much more than about 2 minutes on wood axle.
Poly lasted about 30 seconds. I knew it wouldn’t and just wanted to see how long.
I have had old stock 100% cotton not last, and it made me very angry to watch beautiful painted wooden get all scratched up as they rolled and crashed into things.
I change string very often it is just part of playing.
I also only trust 2 sources of string to buy from for 100% cotton.
My point is, spend the money and buy string in bulk and be prepared to change it often. It’s necessary for fixed axle play.

Really 1000% depends on what you’re doing with it.
If you’re doing anything like regular 1a tricks with fixed axle, you’re going to have a vastly different experience and that difference will extend to the string. If you’re doing a lot of loops/moons or hard regenerations like Time Warp it’s a whole other ballgame.
For me:
- Modern high quality poly really does not melt - it just feels different and I get a lot more of a sweet/sour side effect from it in the way it interacts with the axle.
- 50/50 (type 8) feels nice, breaks in fast, and has decent longevity. It’s my favorite with metal axles.
- Cotton is cotton and purists like me will always prefer it’s feel for wood. Type 10 is perfect for modern stall play with modern walnut axles. Type 8 is pretty antiquated as its benefit is toward sleeper based tricks which it does no better than poly and lasts way less. The new ZipLine cotton is my favorite fixed axle string so far. Plays crisp and even and the thickness is right on.

I think I live in a state of PTSD over damaged works of art. So that’s why I’ll never put it on a wood axle. Yet that is just my own experience.
Type 9 is my favorite.
Funny think with type 8, I tried it on some $1 store metal axle thing I toyed with for about 2 days before it fell apart at the axle and wasn’t worth the glue. The string worked good for it.
I made some 100% cotton from high quality Egyptian cotton thread once, it was nice but never got up the desire to make more. I should, it was fun to have something home made for this bobby.

So long story long, I joined in on the recent F.I.X.I.E. competition (the virtual online one) hosted by @adamantiumpops. I knew next to nothing about fixes, and still no clue to be honest, but I had an absolute blast hanging out with some really cool people and enjoying the general banter and camaraderie.
After the Fixie completion ended Gethin (@gcoomans) messages me saying he would love to send me some fixies if I would like to try out more 0a!
TLDR; Gethin kindly sent me these epic yoyos to try my hand at 0A!
I posted this on the Mail Day thread already, but as I understand Gethin is a Fixie main, I wanted to also share it here so that he gets some kudos he deserves from all you Fixie masters. 🙂

oh weird. I run YYE 50/50s that I bought in a 100 pack like 10 years ago and they work great. They last awhile too. I’ve had the same string on my tmbr for days now and it still feels pretty good.
