So I recently got a Hydrangea.

I freaking love it. This made me curious about the other Japanese brands. Currently mostly Turning Point.

But it’s hard to find any info on it.

So tell me about your favourite models. What are they and why do you like them?

Some models I’ve been looking at are the Hinemosu, Top Nur, Turning point III and Point Break. But if there’s others you’d recommend I’d love to hear about them.

Sell me a on a Turning Point.

In my mind Hydrangea is absolute bog standard, no-nonsense performance focused yoyo done extremely well. Emphasis on standard specs and general design.

Turning Point makes performance-forward yoyos but often with atypical specs. If Hydrangea is standard then Turning Point is niche. You’ll find capped yoyos, tiny yoyos, huge yoyos, heavy yoyos, etc.

Turning Point I think is for the player who wants a specific niche of yoyo, while still having performance as the primary focus. So in my mind going for Turning Point means you want something 52mm or below in diameter, or something over 70 grams.

If you want something very standard from Turning Point, I think you’ll quickly find that you can get models from other brands that perform better or are a lot cheaper (often both), and at that point you’re just picking it up because the players or aesthetics are speaking to you.

Turning Point is not the peak of yoyo performance, but the goofy spec models are absolutely built to perform and not just casual models that make yoyoing harder.

Fits best when you want it stays stable vertically without churning axis. Solid but nimble. Narrow gap. Very durable. Spins very reliable.

During my first year of yo-yoing I wanted to try one of everything. This is led to me owning at least one of most brands. Admittedly, I haven’t tried a hydrangea.

However it took me almost a year to you even try a turning point yo-yo. They seemed almost boring and expensive compared to so many other brands.

Nowadays, I’m not too worried about variety of brands, I just want different Turning Point models lol
Out of my top 5 most expensive models 3 are Turning Point.

I believe the founder was a 3A player who wanted to make better 3A yo-yos. Thats why Turning Point ended up making so many heavy rim weighted models, the demands of the division are different and call for maximum stability and spin time. I think I once read they were the very first Japanese company to exclusively sell metal yo-yos only. They focused on quality, not quick cash.

Fast forward a bit and we have people like Jason Liu winning 1a divisions in China with his even heavier 76g models based on his design of the Collapsar.

I don’t think the current scoring system favors heavier throws, but the style of their players shines through if you ask me. That being said Turning Point makes several normal weight throws nowadays. I haven’t tried the Hinemosu but I would love to!

The annodized ones are annoyingly hard to come by, but I bet they will hold their value really well.

You got an Amaryllis right? Hydrangea stuff is more optimized for performance, trying to be much more efficient with their weight. Aquilegia and Berberis are extremely good but come with the caveat of titanium price tags, and since they’re lighter I actually think they’re a bit worse than the Amy or old Magnolia. Really I think you’ve hit the peak with the Amaryllis, and anything else will be a downgrade. If Amaryllis but less wide is appealing, then Magnolia could be nice.

Turning Points are generally more concerned with durability than efficiency, and leave a lot more of their mass in the walls and especially axle/hub of the yoyo. This is absolutely a positive aspect if you’re into 3A, but it’s actively sacrificing performance for durability. There’s always trade offs in designs.

Outside of the niche spec stuff, I think a lot of the appeal of Turning Point is sort of collector focused. Certainly good models, but I think you’ll play a Hinemosu and be left with the impression of “yeah it’s a good yoyo, and I already have several other good yoyos.” In 2026 I think a yoyo like the Hinemosu or Colony or something is basically just “I really like Takeshi” and that’s about it.

That durability thing is also quite nice when you play 5a over stone floors like I do a lot. So that might actually be interesting then.

I definately will be looking in to Hydrangea more then. Thanks for the answer

Yeah Kentaro is a goat.

He also designed a lot of yoyofactory yoyos for a period of time and invented the standardized pad system we have today.

The brand is run by a goat and has some of the best and coolest players. All the alu in tp yoyos is 6061 so they never really push to that min maxxxed weight distro which feels good like comfortable to play with and still perform insane

Def try a mosu at some point to feel how that yoyo plays vs other yoyos around those specs and youll get the tp vibe.

Also the tp yoyos I have are insanely durable like really really hard to rim shift the bimetals. I play a lot of 3a and they def hold up really well.

I can only tell you about the past. I don’t have any Hydrangea yo-yos, nor have I ever owned a TP yo-yo. I only have two clones made by YoyoUfo, clones of the Solenoid and Leviathan.
Turning Point is a brand founded by Kentaro Kimura, one of the best 3A players of the early 2000s.

[![](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/f/8/b/f8ba3df2c422032d95392ea8b723df0913f887e9.jpeg "2009 World Yo-Yo Contest 3A Division 1st Kentaro Kimura") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtIVZwKp1R0)

Before founding his own brand, he was a player for Yoyofactory for years,

[![](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/a/9/b/a9b333654351931e702f699c98396ff769176c8f.jpeg "YoYoFactory Undeniable: Kentaro Kimura (2009)") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woyRRDMYoGE)

and I believe he started producing with Ben’s help. They never explicitly stated the material used (but mostly it was 6061) or where their yo-yos were produced. Thanks to the owner’s fame and their Japanese origins, they quickly became a leading brand, and the most recognizable and original feature of the first models was the hourglass shape.
Then a myriad of models followed, very different from each other in terms of specifications, materials (perhaps it’s the brand that made the most magnesium models), and so on. Their team has always featured world champions and top-level players.
I don’t own any of their models because I personally always thought they were yo-yos priced too high for what they actually were, but that’s just my personal opinion.

Interesting fact: TP has always used 6061 aluminum for its alloy yoyos. I also asked Ben during this year’s A-May-Zing Sale livestream why kentaro consistently uses 6061 instead of more durable alloys like 7075. According to ben kentaro thinks it’s silly to use other metals such as 7075, that’s it

</div>

More precisely, I meant to say that TP never had a personal website (at least at the time) and in many online shops that sold their yoyos (for a period they had a personal one but I believe it no longer exists for years) unlike other brands where the type of material was also indicated in the specifications table, for their products I remember that this item was missing.
I didn’t know about this statement but if that was his vision, ok, so even the most recent models (I ask because I haven’t followed this brand’s models much for years) have never been made with 70XX category alloys?

Just to clarify, I wouldn’t talk so much about “durability” as “hardness,” meaning that 60XX alloys are as durable as the others. It’s not that they deteriorate over time; in fact, compared to 70XX alloys, they don’t oxidize (yo-yos left raw retain their shine forever) and are color anodically much more easily… so they’re a little more durable, meaning they’re much less affected by environmental conditions over time. On the other hand, they’re a little less hard, so under the same amount of impact, they tend to deform a little more easily, but even this aspect is relative, in the sense that we’re still talking about aluminum. As for the difference in density between the two alloys, 70XX alloys are certainly denser, but even in this case, it’s a reasonable difference and not a huge factor.
