I am entertaining the idea of making string. Not just for myself but for others to use as well. I have plenty of complaints when it comes to yoyo string in general, and I want to hear about what other’s complaints are when it comes to string.
I’m not making this post to diss any brands, just want to hear general complaints and grievances.
I’ll start. Very few strings are long enough for me, and the ones that do offer long string often don’t offer thick, long string. Then when I find one I like, they’re rarely in stock anywhere.

Have you tried Twisted Stringz? They are quite long and come in 3 difference thicknesses. I quite like them. Texture and twist is good.

My main complaint is that bulk cotton doesn’t get thicker than Type 10. Should go all the way to 13, maybe even 14, IMO. 😅

My complaints:
1 strings that are not soft (or don’t have a soft variety)
2 lack of colour (they all have the same 3 colour and some have more but I wish to see more unconventional colour like black or blends like neon yellow and white it really pops more then just neon yellow)
3 have a loop at the end (I usually unite it and tie it again I don’t trust my expensive yo-yo with that loop)
4 they don’t last pretty long
5 they don’t hold tension well enough
6 strings that are not long enough
7 strings that don’t come in different thickness
8 strings that are uneven
9 it’s hard to find a nylon strings
And 10 and most importantly strings that are not sold in Europe

For me is sometimes strings are not whippy enough and to have the very whippy ones you have to go with other materials that sometimes feel stiff.
The discolouring, it would be lovely a string that doesn’t discolour much after lot of use.
The tension, some strings are weird when they new the tension is all over the place than it adjust for a period and then it mess up again easily, it will be nice to have a string that is nice from the beginning and then deteriorate using it so it is messed up only at the end of it’s life, so basically come with a already break in string.
About colours it will be nice to have a string that doesn’t feel “different” between colours, it happened so many times that yellow strings feel different from green and white, there was a post around about the dyeing process that make them play slighlty different, I would love a white string with the properties of the neon yellow but I still haven’t found one

most if not all cotton yoyo strings are mid and can have better quality.

No real complaints from me…
Well, I guess I could say a few things.
Some strings come too long. Some strings come too short. Some batches of string seem to have several different lengths.Some strings too stretchy. Some strings, not stretchy at all. Some strings last forever, but need to be washed constantly.
Some strings hardly last at all And don’t even last long enough to need to be washed. Some strings are too thick. Some strings are too thin. Some strings are the right thickness, but they’re too rough. Sometimes they’re too soft. Sometimes they’re too light. Sometimes they’re too heavy.
Sometimes they allow tighter binds. Sometimes they cause looser binds. Sometimes you can’t bind with them at all. Some strings whip really well. Some strings at first feel like they’re gonna whip pretty good and they don’t. Some strings first impression that they won’t whip for beans and they turn out to be whipping fools.
Some cheap strings last a really long time. Some expensive strings don’t last long at all. Sometimes you can get some good strings, maybe 100 in a bunch for $16. And some strings cost $10 for five strings. Sometimes a string works great on one yoyoworks and horrible on another yo-yo , Sometimes I think it’s weird to get a brand new yo-yo for over 100 bucks that comes with no string. And sometimes I wonder why I really care because more often than not whatever string comes with the yo-yo. I don’t like it anyway.
Some strings that I really like, hold tension horribly. And some strings that I don’t like at all seem to never coil up for one magical reason or another. Sometimes people will tell me a certain string is absolutely the best string they ever used in forever. So I get stupid and buy a clump of the same exact string, and it turns out to be one of my least favorite strings and now I got a whole pile of them.
I really like making my own string. But I hardly ever like the string that I end up making. I seem to be proud of myself for being able to make strings at all even though the strings I make suck half the time.
A signature string may work absolutely amazing for the person it was designed for. Unfortunately I may not have the same results because the string wasn’t designed for me.
When I buy a new string blend, I never hope that it will be the greatest string I’ve ever used. I only pray that it won’t suck as bad as the last string that I bought that I thought was going to be the greatest string I’ll ever Buy…
But…. Other than those few caveats, I hardly notice any real differences no matter what string I use. They are All pretty much exactly the same…. Only somewhat different.

i feel the same way, and that really made me laugh.
what i’ve found, that works for me, is finding something decent enough or that i enjoy, or has some good quality traits, and adapt to any parts that i don’t like. for example , a string that is a little rougher may be a more consistent and long lasting product. as long as it doesn’t feel like sandpaper, it has some attributes that i appreciate.
consistency across a brand and type is what really stands out for me. if you have a set of strings that i bought two years ago, and i buy them again, i want to be sure i’m getting the same thing.
i feel like the string game is a tough one. it’s a big commitment that seems like laborious yet meticulous work, and when you finally get your first signature blend down, you have to mass produce that, on a sometimes massive rig you have to set up in your basement or whatever… and everyone wants it! and though i have found a lot of boutique strings that i like, i’ve yet to commit to one because i wonder how long they’ll be doing it. shout out to all you dedicated string makers…
so, i guess my ‘complaint’ is there’s not enough strings that i can depend on lasting until my next reorder. i want to buy 50 or 100 at a time and not worry that there won’t be any in stock…. i don’t keep (or wash) strings. sometimes there’s a lot of throws coming in and going out. if it’s a yoyo i plan to bst it comes with it. and when i’m sometimes asked what string it was i sent on the yo, i have the answer. i pretty much keep 2 different brands of strings, and i get the same color for each every time so they are easy to pick out (they are also quite different).
getting back to consistency - strings are the cheapest and easiest things to diagnose and change out on your yoyo if it doesn’t ‘feel’ right. cheaper and easier to clean than a bearing. easier than changing response, etc. if the yoyo doesn’t feel right, i swap to my other string, and then continue to diagnose as necessary. i’m not saying that strings will cure your vibe problems lol, but for me, having consistent strings makes my playing experience more pleasant.

there is no long term source for high end strings in bulk ( like a 50 pack minimum). its all boutique stuff that could vaporize at any moment. I’ve been enjoying wooly nylon since its super whippy and lasts forever, but i don’t know where i can get it anymore. that resource appears to have dried up.

My complaint about newer strings, especially boutiques are they are usually too soft and too thick or fluffy for my liking. I don’t want to feel like I’m using a springy shoestring.
I like medium thinnest with a crunch. Not so stiff its like plastic, but I do prefer it to be a bit stiffer than what most sell. Long live chaos strings.

ohh woops forgot to complain. uhh i hate that some brands packaging is super non-descript or have no difference between skews leaving me with a whole bunch of yellow, white and green string that all looks and feels similar and i have no clue which is which.

I imagine that when I see the advert, I do love Zipline and I mostly use Alphaline but the price for the boutique is quite high for me that I also play several hours a day.
It would be nice to have something great at bulk price

Having no shorter string options is frustrating. This is mostly just an xdiv complaint, but it feels insane having to waste nearly half the length of a string every time I cut them.

Strings should really all list their length on store pages. I like long string and it’s always a bit of a gamble when trying new string whether it will be long enough.
Yoyos list their specs, it seems mad to me that standardised info including at least length isn’t given at this point (other potential basic info: what kind of blend it is, no. Of threads, idk what else would be worth being standard info).
My only other complaint is I hear lots of good things about OT fat but it’s always out of stock when I’m buying yoyos.
