I had a couple ideas today while I was making strings, thought I would post them here to see what you guys think of them.
Idea #1: We have an Iron String Maker America contest. It would be similar to Iron Chef America in the fact that everyone receives some āmystery threadā (we all get the same kind obviously) and some other threads that arenāt necessarily mysteries (staple threads like serger, dual duty, etc.) Then we all make our recipe and send it to an unbiased innocent third party tester who would judge the creations and choose a winner. There could be some small prize maybe, like $10 cash, or thread, or something us string makers could use.
I think that would be a really fun contest, and it is pretty fair because everyone will be getting surprised, so it isnāt like Paul can enter his tried-and-true stuff and we are stuck with what we have. Maybe there could be multiple categories like coolest looking and best playing overall? I donāt know, I thought I would bring this up and see if anybody would be interested.
Idea #2: This is just an idea I didnāt think out too much, but maybe we could do a thread swap? Thereās many ways you could do this. I know on some fishing forums the jig making guys assemble a big box of stuff, and send it around to everybody. You take what you want, and then add in some of your own stuff of equal or greater value. This just keeps going around, it always is changing. You can take nothing or you could take half of whatās in the box. Or I know in the fountain pen world, they establish a database of different inks that people would be willing to share, and then you can contact them about doing a trade.
That is just some ideas I had, because itās always cool to try new threads, and I just think it would be fun.
I especially like the contest idea, seems quick and easy. You would only need to make like 2 strings, and send them to some reputable forum member that we would contact in advance about doing this. Then they choose a winner and they get a prize.

Hey everyone! So twice i have been to Joannās or a online thread store and these colorful shiny threads catch my eye so i buy them, i get back, make a string and it is terribly rough. Any tips on controlling the beast that is embroidering thread?

Twist it loose? Define what you mean by āroughā

You could try different processes to see if any smooth it. Ex.: Boiling, dipping in alcohol, dipping in acetone, misting with oven cleaner, dipping in alcohol then burning it off, microwaving, stretching, using a UV light on it, soaking in water for a month, soaking in vinegar for a month, soaking in hot sauceā¦

never burn polyester it burns extremely fast and it pops making melted poly fly every where it hurts.
