Tonight I tested out a process for roughing out Gnomads on the CNC, and so far it’s been super successful. I’m super interested in how you think the play, one process vs the other. Does the lathe balance them better vs milling? This do look clean! What model cnc do you have? ---

I should have specified that the change in process is a new toolpath and bit on the CNC, rather than changing from the lathe to CNC. I still finish them on the lathe afterward, so they sort of get both treatments. I press fit an axle to carefully try them out, and they seem well-balanced so far. I really like this piece of maple lumber - nice straight, evenly spaced grain promises some especially balanced and smooth fixies. My CNC is a SainSmart Genmitsu 3020 Pro Max (v1). ---

The fact that cnc isn’t much more than a high grade 3d printer worries me. I need to remind myself I don’t have the space for wood working and junk ---

I’ll help disabuse you of the thought by mentioning other equipment involved: bench planer, miter saw, table saw, drill press, lathe, air compressor 😆. Ok not all of those are absolutely required, and I really do support anyone wanting to make wood yo-yos. ---

There is some seriously inspiring stuff in this thread! I’ve wanted a wood lathe for a long time (I really enjoyed working on a lathe turning mechanical parts in college) but never knew what I’d make with any practicality…it’s gonna be yo-yos. I’ve tinkered with lots of other misc stuff woodworking projects in the past and it seeming like making wooden throws might just be the perfect balance of shop time, creativity, usefulness, and fun! ---

I realised the a big part of the reason why I hate making wooden yoyos nowadays is the wood shavings getting all over me and everywhere, so I just bought myself a dust extractor and lathe shroud. This should help enormously. I will be making some more yoyos soon (if anyone even cares anymore). ---
