It’s on the advanced end of the spectrum, but if you already have a strong snap start it’s really not too hard with a koma. I’m a relative novice in koma but I can snap start into basic trapeze tricks just fine, actually getting the regens though is a different story.

chonkake goma I’d consider to be a different type of top entirely, you never wind them to begin with and the trick sets are pretty divergent
If you’re interested in that you don’t even need to buy one, just go into your kitchen!

That’s good info. I haven’t looked too far into Koma, other than I took to it much more easily than the Spintatstic/Tromp Space tops that I have. I think the style in this Chonkake Goma is more my cup of tea, especially since a shoulder injury.

I bought a top and then realized I needed clean open floor space to practice and my children conflict with that. Or going outside but no thank you.

Yes you need some space, also tops will hide in the absolute hardest place to find them when you drop it in a room with furniture. Really practicing outside can be very helpful because you don’t have to worry about hitting stuff.

Just got a top, and this does help. Thank you.
But mostly replying because I wanted to give a shoutout to Empire! I worked for them about ~10-12 years ago, great company. Even have an Empire sticker on my current hardhat.

The winding is laborious for sure. I’m all about the snap start so I’m guessing I need to pivot to Koma. What’s the origin of the name, Koma?

I guess it’s more fun to play than watch. To an onlooker, it just looks like the same move. Same with yo-yo…. You can’t appreciate the skill it takes unless you’re in it.

I think I could probably do the snap start to palm spin, but to land it on the string like that looks difficult. Maybe I should get a Koma tip for my spin gadget? I have one of the threaded ultralight side effects they did. Then I would be using a yoyo and a top!

If you grab one of those side effect top tips you should also consider adding an ohruri to your cart as well. I think that’s the cheapest option for a koma that has an axle designed for string tricks, the disc at the bottom of the axle + the rotation of the top does a lot to help keep it on the string.
If you’re at all familiar with offstring yoyoing, trampoline and barrel role are some pretty simple first tricks to try. Throwing a top straight into trapeze is also pretty easy if you have offstring experience.

Thank you for posting that! I did not know about those tutorials. I met Quentin at worlds, he is a riot! That tutorial on snap starts is the first in depth explanation I have ever heard.
Hey when you master that, you can catch the top on the sole of your shoe while doing a handstand, I’m not sure what the set up is because I was talking to someone and when everyone was cheering I turned around and he was already in a handstand with the top spinning on the bottom (top??)of his foot. Is it still the bottom of your foot if you are upside down? I guess it’s a gravity thing. He is amazing.
