Is playing with shields on a bearing better than playing with a de-shielded bearing???

Shields keep large debris out of a bearing. This is important for skateboard bearings for example. They keep large amount of dirt or small rocks out of the bearing. On a yo-yo the bearing isn’t going to be running into things like that. Shields can even cause problems by rubbing on shims and slowing the bearing down.

yea, dude i play with just about all my bearings with shields off. if you have a new bearing, take the shields off and play with it. that will break it in faster.

I have noticed no ill effects either way. Unless shims are present. Then I like em out. Of course most of mine only have one shield in them.
