I know there are purpose made, offstring yoyos, but I’ve been wondering about some of the “normal” yoyos that are convertable, or at least workable, as offstrings as well, and wondered if anyone has done this with a YYF Replay and how well it worked. I’ve have a replay as well as 2 offstrings, but have had zero chances to practice with them so far, so figured I’d ask about it before spending time trying something that’s just not gonna work. Was thinking about getting a second one to keep in reserves if I ever learn offstring well enough to do some of the 2 yoyo tricks. ---

If it’s setup for responsive play you can use it. When learning 4a the YoYo as well as walls, flooring and ceiling takes a beating so just keep that in mind. The replay probably won’t bounce well either. ---

Oh I’m not even going to begin practicing until weather allows me to be outside for that reason. lol I just was curious if it’s even possible for the replay to do is the main thing. ---

If it’s the Replay Pro, it has a bolt that is too large for a slim bearing, so a responsive setup isn’t really possible ---

I don’t think it’s a pro? I did just throw a responsive bearing and and it worked pretty okay, though has a bit of lag in coming back. Do pros say as much on them anywhere or is it just an inner gear thing? ---

Certainly possible, but easier to learn new tricks on anything more suitable. I learnt offstring on a YYJ Dark Magic, and I’ve never owned an actual 4A oriented yoyo. Original offstring tricks were done on fixies and transaxles. Playing responsive makes it easier but learning to bind 4A is worth an afternoon running around after yoyos too. I like full loop offstring, which is easier with a wider gap and binds like a regular setup. Does it have a cap or an open nub? The Replay is from over a decade ago if I remember correctly. It may fit, but you will mess it up if you try and fully screw the two halves together to press around the bearing ---

Cap, and I had it fully screwed together and played it a few minutes, hence how I knew about the lag when recalling it. I’ve put it back to unresponsive though. No damage detected from the experiement, but now I’m stressed about trying again. lol ---

Seeing as replay likes to deform at the post I don’t know if off string is the best for it. I feel like it would quickly get a bad vibe after a few hard drops. ---

Can confirm the posts deform. I have a replay pro that when it’s “tight” (slightly snug) it’s responsive, like pretty much a fixed axle, and when it it’s loose (barely snug) it’s unresponsive. It’s what I used to use at my club to go back and forth really quickly to teach responsive and unresponsive tricks, but now it’s gotten so bad I’m tempted to throw it away. It’s a recon replay pro though, so it’s semi interesting to look at.
