These inserts were supposed to be temporary, i was going to make ones that are closed off and concave at the end.
It already spins for ages on your finger as is.
Really happy with this one.

This one is completed, inserts are finally perfect. The red plastic I used is POM-H, it’s a bit softer to the touch but slightly heavier than the white POM-C.
End result:
52mm diameter
44mm wide
66 grams

you didn’t need any knurling on the hub inserts?
These look great, btw - very similar to hub/spacer systems I’ve had made for production yoyos.
Here’s a photo showing the knurling. It helps keep the hub from slipping when tightening the yoyo.

I’m a fan of the knurling, but One Drop’s kit doesn’t use any knurling either. If the parts fit together well enough the knurling isn’t necessary.

I’ve been using this setup for over 15 years, I’ve knurled some in the past but as I tend to machine these on a manual lathe omitting it ends up saving quite some time. Also the knurling seems a bit redundant if you turn both diameters with a diameter that’s about 0.05 mm too large. If done right the halves shouldn’t slip when tightening down, and even if they do it shouldn’t affect play in any way.
It’s probably better to have the knurling on production runs I can imagine. Does the knurling wear down on the plastic over time?

Oh yeah, I use stainless steel for the spacers. The inner bearing ring doesn’t wear down the seat and the spacers can be thinner as well. These are 1.3 mm thick with the raised part being 0.3mm.
About 0.3 - 0,4 grams heavier a piece but there’s bound to be downsides

It doesn’t seem to unless I’m removing the hubs frequently, which is an unusual thing to do.

Every time I make alterations I think it’s finally good enough to stop focusing on that part of the yoyo. Only to find out it’s not after a few days of play. Oh well, here’s another one :wink:

Took a while but after going through a whole lot of different shapes this works best. Also switched to stainless steel. Bit more center weighted but more durable and seems to fingerspin better than raw aluminium.
I could make them in alu, have the ends beadblasted and get them anodized but as I can’t be bothered with all the hassle I don’t mind the extra weight (69.79 gr). Feels lighter than it is though.
