Can you paint the ken in the same way you paint the tama? Will it affect play?

From what I understand the drama is the ball, the ken is the other thing

Ken = Stick

In Japanese, tama literally means ball/sphere/globe.  
Kendama also loosely translates to stick and ball.  
Ken + tama = Kendama.
