That’s fair, and I completely understand the cost, extra handling, and potential damage involved in sending finished yo-yos back out for engraving. I hadn’t really considered the additional QC risk, so that part makes sense.
I think where we differ is more philosophical than technical. I don’t have a problem with numbered packaging on records or action figures because the packaging is often considered part of the collectible itself. With a yo-yo, though, the yo-yo is really the object I’m collecting. If #37 can be taken out of its box, swapped with #82, and nobody can ever tell the difference, then to me neither yo-yo is actually #37 or #82—the boxes are.
There’s also a pretty strong precedent for permanent serialization within yo-yo collecting itself. Tom Kuhn has been individually serializing many of his metal and limited-edition yo-yos for decades. The Turbo-Yo is probably the most extreme example. Only 39 prototypes were made, and individual examples can still be identified by their permanent serial numbers.
Obviously, I’m not saying the serial number is why a Turbo-Yo is worth thousands. Its rarity, history, and importance are much bigger factors. But the serialization gives each individual yo-yo permanent provenance. Turbo-Yo #20 will always be Turbo-Yo #20, regardless of what box or packaging, or bagit happens to be sitting in. That’s something numbered packaging alone can’t provide.
And I’m not saying CLYW should have absorbed a bunch of extra expense just to engrave them. If permanent numbering would have added another $20 or $30 to the retail price, I personally would have paid it on a historically significant run of only 100, but I completely understand that others might not feel the same way.
The connection to the original Peaks is also part of why I notice it more with this particular release. So much effort went into tying the Legacy Peak back to Peak history. The original CAD, Levi’s handwriting, the limited quantity, the numbered presentation. All of that permanently tying each number to the actual yo-yo would have been the final little detail that completed the idea for me.
None of that changes the fact that the Legacy Peak itself is fantastic. I’m anticipating mine is beautifully made too, and I’m really glad CLYW did the project. I’m talking strictly about provenance and collectibility, not machining quality or whether the release was successful.
I’d probably sum up my position this way. I understand why CLYW numbered them the way they did, and I don’t think it was “wrong.” I just don’t think numbered packaging and a serialized yo-yo are the same thingn. And yo-yo history itself gives us some pretty good examples of why that distinction can matter to collectors.

AFAIK, the shop was One Drop and they do have in-house laser engraving as well as the ability to the QC (presumably, they are handling QC for the CLYW Summit 2s).

So, given enough time (and money), it seems relatively achievable (which is not to say feasible within the overall project parameters, goals, etc.).

Did “classic vibe” get marked as such, e.g. with the “fool’s gold” engravings?

The shop was indeed Onedrop, from what I know, any ways.

Steve told me that he/CLYW performed the full assembly and QC process. Onedrop may be (I imagine that they are) fully capable of both operations, however, from what I understand they don’t typically offer those services. They surely didn’t offer them to us when we last quoted a project with them. At the time, they didn’t even offer anodizing services, we would have had to source and coordinate that ourselves! They aren’t the one-stop-shop that most of the overseas players are.

Not throwing shade, I absolutely adore Onedrop and I do have big dreams to work with them one day \<3

I asked Steve on the clyw discord if the classic vibe legacy peaks were marked in any way to distinguish them from the original 100 and he says:

> Nope. Just part of the run.

So I guess there won’t be a way to tell.

I know for sure that 2 of the “classic vibe” ones are #90 and #91, my theory is that perhaps they were saved for the end/are the last few that start somewhere around the 90’s? Could be a good way to tell if true.

I believe this (terrible) approach was initiated or at least strongly adopted by Luftverk (I’m referring to numbering only one accessory provided, for example a certificate of authenticity and not the yo-yo).
That number written in marker on a “pyrography” wooden certificate is, I think, one of the ugliest and most sloppiest things I’ve ever seen in my life… and for $150 for a alluminium yo-yo, it wouldn’t have been such a big deal to pyrography those boards, inserting the assigned number each time and lasering it onto the yo-yo cup as well. I tend to pay a lot of attention to the little things, the details… something like that, in my eyes, diminishes the importance of everything else…

hspin serialized and lasered all of its yo-yos, all of them, not the limited runs… thousands of yo-yos!.. He sold them at regular prices, and I’ve never heard of it causing him any inconvenience… $150 for an aluminum yo-yo, and you have to put up with the sloppiness? Why?

Even less because there was also 10 purchase spots raffled. Nothing to indicate it’s a bgrade and tbh it plays perfectly fine.. at least it does to me but I’m not particularly sensitive to vibe.

I _think_ they were sold last, so #s 94 and up (at least) would be b-grades(?).

Incorrect - the 6 total sold as “classic vibe” have all been accounted for now, they’re serial #'s 89-94. They’re listed up on the registry now. So while the yoyo itself won’t have any markings that determine it to be a classic vibe, the accompanying packaging w/ a serial # of 89-94 will let you know. As a side note, this wouldn’t have been figured out without the registry, so I’m glad it actually had some real world use/purpose now besides existing for my own satisfaction :joy:
