Yes I do this all the time and it work and doesn’t damage the yoyo, obviously let’s remove the bearing and the axle before do it.  
Halves on the floor with the side with the return system up (facing you), just step gently on the centre of the yoyo for a second it is very possible you will ear a “click”, do it for both halves once and then ready to play again!

I did this once with my recognition. Luckily in my house. Binded with no loop and missed the catch. The yoyo rolled threw the living room and onto the kitchen hardwood floor still rolling.
