# Hummingbird glue dried up at the axle - how far to put it back in?

I found an old Hummingbird fixed axle wood yoyo from my childhood and it’s practically mint which I’m really excited about. Unfortunately, the glue (if there ever was any) on one side of the yoyo dried up and if I throw it the yoyo comes apart. I’m thinking some simple wood glue would fix the job. However, I want to know if there’s a specific distance or amount of gap I need to leave in the yoyo for it to function properly. I would hate to glue it and it’s too tight or too wide to function as intended. I’m also going to be careful that it dries straight.

You should be able to see the old glue line. I’ll measure a fixed Duncan when I get home for you.

My BC spitfire, classic and BC/TK no jive (glued axle) are 9 cards. My BC champion is 8 cards.

What’s the formula for what works and how do you discover how many cards? Trial and error?

I don’t have a formula. Those are just what I measured on those yoyos just now. They are all as they were received new. Never reglued. They all play fine by my standards.

When I did the Duncan I tested how many cards fit into my Tom Kuhn Woody since it’s also an imperial and plays amazingly.

The card trick worked. I love the feel of throwing this and it’s become my go-to for looping. I don’t have any other loopers so this will do. I haven’t even explored fixed axle tricks beyond what my hands want to do naturally. The blue string is a cotton blend from Yoyo Sam. If like to try 100% cotton when I get some.
