Hi! I have a 14 year old son who is obsessed with yo-yo’ing and has gotten really good by watching videos on this site and you tube. He wants to get into competition, but I have no idea where to even start. We do not know anyone who yo-yo’s. I googled online and found the national yo-yo contest in Philadelphia. Can I just sign him up and fly up there? How does one begin competing? Thank you for any help! ---

You can start by checking [https://yoyocontest.com/](https://yoyocontest.com/) and then maybe look on facebook for a local yoyo club you can ask. ---

I dont know about travel, but he would have to find music and make “freestyles”. If you go check the contest page, it can show how long the freestyles are supposed to be and how many freestyles you should prepare. Searching up the scoring-criteria can also help your son score higher, especially if he gets how the scoring system works. ---

I think he should just go to nationals just to watch and meet others and make connections. That would be a good start in my opinion. It would be better to compete in smaller contests when just starting. ---

What state do you live in? I am preparing for the East Coast Masters in Pittsburgh (great experience by the way) there are a host of good competitions concentrated in the midwest. (MI states, OH states, Illinois states) The World yoyo contest is in Ohio this year, spectator passes are kind of expensive but it is an awesome event. ---

We are in North Carolina. I will check out the one in Pittsburgh! I really appreciate all of the responses. My son loves to throw and I want to support and encourage him the best that I can! ---

ECM was the first contest I ever attended, (just as a spectator) venue was great, last year was kind of weird because there were drunk people everywhere (long story, not associated with the contest itself) but there will not be this year so that is better for people bringing kids. Everthing about it is here: [Redirecting...](https://www.facebook.com/events/381945959207710/) I just found out that VA states is tomorrow, which means that if you wanted to watch a contest it is there, probably too late to compete though… [2020 Virginia State Yo-Yo Contest -](https://yoyocontest.com/virginia/) ---
