# How do you bind a dead yoyo?

I have seen a few different techniques and videos for this but whats a good way to do this for a beginner? I’m tired of winding it up the old way.

My favorite is the “Make it Rain” technique. Palm roll/throw essentially.

Learning a restart is super helpful. Are you using an unresponsive yoyo? Practicing with a responsive yoyo can help speed up the learning process for restarts and just general early yoyoing. Just try a few and see what works for you.

I use the trapeze wind for a lot of my responsives. It’s just kind of enjoyable, haha.

I usually use that for unresponsives as well, though it requires the extra step of a pseudo-regen after finishing the partial wind.

Yeah i know but it just doesn’t work with some yoyos. Depends on the response set up like i like my unresponsive 1a yoyos super slippy and it just doesn’t work with most of them so I was hesitant to tell op to try it unresponsive.

I usually do the first method that doc shows in that video a couple posts up. Choke up on the sting a bit, put the string between my middle and ring and give it just the right amount of pressure as a roll my NTH back to “pop” it and dramatically follow it to maximize its spin to wind the string.
I never thought I’d be able to dead-start a yoyo, but like everything with this hobby, and life for that matter, just takes dedication to failing 100 times to find the “secrets” of making it work.

Don’t. When the yoyo dies, start doing dead whips from the ground like a Brent stole or a kamikaze whip. Make it seem like you meant to let the spin run out, your audience will be very impressed.
Jokes aside, my favorite way to kickstart a yoyo is to literally kick start it using my foot and the ground. Wouldn’t recommend this method on anything but a beater throw though.

If you practice snap starts for long enough you will eventually be able to fully rewind a dead yoyo from nothing with just a snap start. I got pretty good at them over time and I can spin it fast enough by hand to do a decent tight bind. Just keep practicing!

snap-start right into a bind is my preferred way. this is the fastest way i’ve found. just load the yo-yo onto a string and you can bind it right off the snap - no snags and it’s super consistent.
although i also like the flash and rhythm of the 2nd snap-loop version. having a really good snap-start is pretty much invaluable imo.

I haven’t specifically practiced snap starts in ages, but now I have a goal: be 1/4 as slick as Ed.
