Thanks to a few PMs, we sorted out what I was doing wrong. I was starting off by just throwing on my left side, or forward and then rotating my body. But no. I needed to throw a breakaway, then plastic whip “against” the spin of the yoyo (the opposite of what I thought of as plastic whip). This makes everything else fall into place.
