I agree, that silver with black ring looks so cool. I already have the green one, and I really love the looks and feel of the polished section. Keeping the polished part super shiny is also fun to fidget with when you cant throw but have it close by.

Depending on how limited a release the fades are I plan on picking one up. I like it more than the “formal attire” colorways, but those are also very nice, especially the one with black where the polished part usually goes.
Edit: also I think more yo-yos should use bimetal styling. It’s a nice alternative to people like me who find solid colors a little plain but don’t like 90% of the other over the top ano styles. I get fades, but apart from the galaxy colorways where the colors actually compliment eachother most splashes/acid washes are really, really ugly and have colors that don’t work with eachother in any way.

What other yo-yos have/have had the kind of legacy of the Shutter at this point? ~6 years since release and it still is popular enough to justify a crazy amount of colorways, and the design still holds up against most modern designs.
Not only that but the evolution of its design, the Wide Angle, which is essentially just a widened OG, is still being used to compete at high levels and seems just as popular as its predecessor.
So popularity, recognition, and results. So I don’t think you could say the Draupnir as the price I think limited the popularity of it, and I really doubt it’s sold close to Shutter numbers.
Maybe the Dark Magic and Hitman? Both have been used to place highly consistently and have been staples for the average yoyoer at the time they were popular.
And then potentially the Raider and Fireball as well. I’m less knowledgeable about those, I know Raiders were popular among high placing 2A players and the Fireball was extremely popular, but I’m not sure about the popularity of Raiders in general or the contest results of Fireballs.
Anyone else have ideas? Im not knowledgeable about yo-yos before the late 90s when every kid had a Yomega from McDonald’s.

I love how he still advertises it as having the looks of a bimetal at half the price, when you can buy a Marco from the **same** company for a couple more dollars.

Modded raiders are still used and recommended today and are even still the yoyo of choice of some high level players.
Our reigning national 2a champion used Raiders. He was also the one selling personally modded raiders years back.

To be fair it’s only relatively recently that bimetals have crept down in price, and the higher end ones are still 100-120. I completely get what you’re saying though, that that downward trend kind of makes his statement counter factual. Maybe he should specify he’s comparing to premium bimetals.

There are plenty of bimetals that have been available for some time that are closer to the price point of a Shutter WA than premium $100 bimetals. Just take a look at YYE’s bimetal page and sort by price. While yes, some of these have come out more recently, yoyos like the Boost, Marco, and Space Cowboy have all been out for a decent amount of time aren’t that much more expensive than the polished WA.
I still understand that most bimetals are going to be around that $100 price point, I just wish that would use something potentially less misleading for advertisement.

Yeah to my mind the Duncan Grasshopper GTX at $75 was a game changer for bimetal pricing. It’s also a _great_ yo-yo, which helps.

Yeah I guess it is even more misleading given that the same company makes bimetals closer to that price point. Maybe he could use a tagline like “it plays like a bimetal so we made it look like one.”
And thanks for correcting me about there being cheaper bimetals for a while now, while I did say relatively recent I wasn’t really sure what the exact timeline of that trend was. If it emerged before I thought it did you’re completely correct.

The community actually dubbed it a bimetal to start with, so they just kinda ran with the “bimetal styling” name for it. They’re not playing it off as a bimetal - they’re quite up front about it not being bimetal specifically not to mislead people. It also helps to not just look at a picture, but actually read what goes along with it.
Edit: On YYE it’s still on the same “Shutter Wide Angle” product page as one of the colorway options, and they actually refer to it as “mirror rim finish” on YYE. So yeah - I don’t anyone is trying to trick people into thinking its a bimetal…I think they just thought it looked good, which it does.
