Flamingos are pink on the inside as well as the outside. Their pinkness is caused by the presence of carotenoid pigments found in the algae and crustaceans that make up the diet of a flamingo. Though the pink coloration is most obvious in a flamingo’s plumage, the carotenoids also impregnate the bird’s tissues, skin, blood and even egg yolk. ---

Birds dont sweat and do not have sweat glands, so to stay cool they evaporate water through their respiratory tract. Watch a bird on a hot summer’s day and you may see it panting or, in some species, rapidly moving the floor of its mouth ---

Emperor penguins can dive to depths of hundreds of meters. Penguins are able to dive so deep because of unique adaptions to their cardiovascular system. As they prepare to dive their heart starts to race and the penguin hyperventilates, which primes its muscles with oxygen. Then it dives in and does something, well, breathtaking: it cuts off the blood supply to its muscles to conserve dissolved oxygen for the rest of its body. Also: This is (loosely) similar process that Wim Hof “The Ice Man” does to sustain his body during arctic hikes, and cold plunges! ---

Birds don’t pee as they need to stay as light as possible. Among their myriad adaptations to do so is the design of their excretory system. Producing pee as well as poo, as mammals do, means you’re going to be retaining urine (which consists of nitrogen-rich urea diluted with lots of water) in a bladder. This isn’t very helpful if you are trying to keep your weight down. So, instead of excreting waste matter as both urine and faeces, birds (with the exception of the ostrich) ditch their waste in one go through an opening called the cloaca. ---

The only bird with nostrils at the end of its beak is the kiwi. This placement helps it sniff for food, such as worms and insects on the ground. It often snorts to clear its nostrils ---

If a frigatebird lands on the **water’s surface** , its feathers become waterlogged. Because their legs are tiny and their wings are massive, they cannot take off from the water. If they stay in the **sea** for more than a few minutes, they will drown. This “flaw” has forced them to become the most skilled pilots in the sky. They must catch **prey** (like **small fish** and **flying fish** ) without ever touching the water. They use their hooked beaks to snatch food from the **surface** with surgical precision. ---
