If you believe the science that Dr. Walter Goldenrath of NASA and Dr. Tom Kuhn concluded, than 1/4" Maple is optimal.
World On A String and Lucky’s Collection Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos and the Original Silver Bullet or commonly known as the SB1
Personal experience, Walnut has better spin times when fresh, but looses response over time. Maple seems to maintain a snappier response over the life of the throw with a consistent spin time IMO.

Thank you for the added details. I feel like play consistency should be the deciding factor. If it loses response before the axle breaks you may wanna change it anyway. I’m also certain that maple dowels are not hard… to find. 😃

Just here to send a super special thanks to @kretzschmar for being such an awesome dude. I finally was able to obtain this throw that Ive spent so much time searching for. What an honor and privilege to have be a part of this community. Extremely grateful for this, the forums, and all of you who participate to make this crazy world a better place thru our shared love for yoyo.
The elusive OGOM has been on my list for so long. It plays like a dream and is a gentle reminder that sometimes you don’t have to search too hard for what you want in life. Sometimes, when the time is right, what you want will find its way to you.

G-Wiz by Sickburn Return Bottoms (@AudreySickburn ). I swapped out the hardware for OG 3in1 hardware and a wooden axle sleeve. Fun take on a classic!

Woo! I didn’t think the old hardware would fit, due to a half milliliter radius in the hex seat. Glad to know it actually fits.
I put my new hardware in an old No Jive but didn’t try the reverse :joy:
