Some quotes from icthus;

> Again. WD-40 WILL NOT HARM YOUR BEARING. It will break up any old lube and if done right will remove all lube. Then it will dry. If this happens and you don’t lube it in any way it will rust. WD-40 won’t rust, harm or do anything else to your bearing. I’ve used it on so many bearings its pathetic. I ALWAYS thin lube afterwards.

> Very few things will dry with no residue. That’s just a fact of life. Yes it will leave something. Thing is it’s such a small amount that it won’t hurt anything. Next time you clean it that will be removed and a new film deposited. My WD-40 bearing has been playing great for a long time. No ill effects. No slowing down or anything. I will say it’s not a lube but it can clean. I recommend lube as always though.

WD40 will indeed gunk up the bearing, but can easily be cleaned out. WD40 should only be used on bearings if the bearing is rusted and cleaned afterwards. And using a drill to break in a bearing is fine, just a lot more hassle. Any dirt can be cleaned out.
