I started back in 89 with AD&D 2nd Edition.
Now I DM 5e/2024.
Getting a new group set up with my wife, her coworker, her coworker’s husband, and a good friend of mine.

Started with 3.5, played a couple campaigns of 5e, and lately play more OSR one shots or short campaigns.
Most of my regular playgroup moved around the world, so one shots make it easier to coordinate having people in the same room/online space.
Been loving KAMB for one shots cause of how chaotic it gets

My friends and I used to play 5e every weekend, had a long campaign going but life got in the way, as did the pandemic lol. We have been making efforts to get back at it tho

KAMB games are always hilarious! As for other systems, one of my favorites has to be Free League’s Year Zero engine, specifically Forbidden Lands.

Started with VTM revised edition in 99ish switched then switched to 3.5 completely skipped 4th still play a bit of homebrew 5e but now my group mostly does one shots etc a lot of OSR and the like.

Kobolds Ate my Babies!
Its a simple rpg system about being small orange fuzzy thongs trying to make the tastiest meal possible
They also have an almost religious fear of King Torg (ALL HAIL KING TORG) as an attempt of giving them a motive for doing anything. Its fun, chaotic, and most importantly for me, can be taught in 15 minutes

ive played a few 5e campaigns with friends and a lot of oneshots. we almost never finish the campaigns due to how busy our lives get and last time we playeds was summer 2024 but my god ive been itching to play again.

Has anyone been digging into the 2024 ruleset? I was a bit leery about them, but after reading through the Player’s Handbook and DMG I’m actually pretty pleased with most of the changes!

I don’t currently play but I’m looking to get into it. Was tempted to try a local gaming store session, but I want to play around and have fun and previous experience with players at gaming shops have been… unsavory. Plus, I’ve read r/rpghorrorstories

I’d highly recommend NOT getting your intro to D&D from a local game store. Does your local library run sessions? They tend to be friendlier atmospheres.
Unfortunately, for how much many people complain that there’s not enough people who play D&D, the hobby is FILLED with gatekeepers. “You’re not a true player if you got into the game from Stranger Things,” “You’re not a real fan if you got into it because of Critical Role,” “You’re lesser than because you’ve only ever played 5e.”
Too much of that nonsense out there. It can be hard to find a warm and welcoming group, because it seems like those kinds of groups try not to advertise too much so they can stay warm and welcoming.

I figured as much. They tend to be filled with either sore winners or tantrum fits.
Also agreed on the gatekeepers. You’d think a game that requires people (and the more the better the game) would try to recruit as many people as logistically possible. Like, so what if you heard about it from . Like, congrats, those people are doing all the hard work to raise awareness and try to make a formerly nerd centric game popular and socially acceptable, only for you to flush it down because they didn’t learn about it . I’m just glad I haven’t heard “Oh, you’re a thrower? Name all the yoyo champions since 1800, alphabetically by last name and the year they won” (Great way to earn the coveted `Block`) but I digress.
It’s even harder in a town filled to the gills with old, rich people who only want to do old, rich people things so the town tries hard to placate them. That “gaming shop” I mentioned is technically a comic book store that accidentally became a front for Funko Pops (wall and a corner of Funkos vs a single, long card table with 8 crates of comics)
Anyway, this turned into a venting rant session, so feel free to disregard, but TL;DR gatekeepers are dumb, especially when the thing you’re gatekeeping requires a lot of people. You’re only gatekeeping yourself from having fun.

It’s not quite the same experience, but there are some great groups to be found online. I’ve done a stint as a professional DM, myself.
I’d totally get a game going online with some throwers if I weren’t already DM’ing 3 other groups (that includes the new group mentioned above)…

I have found success finding people on the Meetup app. The interface is kinda clunky, but ive found people on it generally friendly and open to new players
