# Contest venue size

Looking at venues for a contest and have no idea how to calculate sq footage space needed for such an event.
Ive seen stage recommendations for like 6 meter by 4 meter. So around 250 sq foot. Generally booths for vendors would be like 10’x10’ so that’s easy like 100sq foot per booth let’s assume I have 6 sponsored vendors that’s 600sqft
Generally seated venues calculate about 8sq ft per person and standing 10sq ft so I guess for a yoyo contest at least 10 sq ft to be safe even if there is seating. If we assume 100 people show up that’s about 1000 sq ft
I could also I guess assume we need practice space so maybe another 12sq ft per person competing and I have no idea how many but let guess maybe 20-40 people participate. So let’s assume another 500 sqft
So is my guesstimate like 2,500 sq feet to run a contest rounding up a tad and making vague assumptions based on other contests in my region?
Not sure if more is needed or if I’m thinking too hard but trying to plan things and have no idea how to calculate space needed for a room full of folks throwing around yo-yos.
Any thoughts, experiences or insights are welcome.

High ceiling are probably the hardest requirement. Drywall ceilings 12ft high are not safe from me. I also knocked a drop tile loose in our office, trying to show people what modern yoyoing looks like, and had to get the little giant to place it back properly lol.

I wasnt an organiser but for the uk national yoyo contest in 2024 we fit comfortably in a mid sized chruch
there might have been about 25-35 competitors and around 60-70 overall in attendance
3 vendor booths also
it was snug so there wasnt masses of practice space indoors, but it worked just fine

We had around 20 competitors at our first National comp. Probably around 100-130 people total in the room. (lot of parents).
Not a lot of vendors though. You don’t need a lot of space.

Check Senior Centers. Many have small stages!

Thank you I honestly hadn’t thought about ceiling hight so I’ve added that to my demand .
so far I have:
1 day 6-8 hour yoyo/skill toy contest/expo. Estimated 100 spectators half seating half standing,
30 contestants,
small practice area,
space for 3-6 vendor booths,
checkin area for contestants,
sound/video staging area,
space for judges,
4’x6’ performance stage,
high ceilings over 12’ required.
Estimated sq. Ft. Needed about 2,500sq.ft.
Very rough math, assumptions and stuff I’ve observed at other contests.
I’ve reached out to a local dying mall and an expo center for pricing, a church and a large community center in the city. Still tracking down spaces but I’m all for any suggestions or thoughts folks have as my experience planning events this size have been theater style investor meetings which are very different venues from a yoyo contest.
