Recently, a trained certified Cerakote applicator told me that he would not coat my BMX bicycle components that have been anodized, stating that ano doesn’t provide for the proper necessary chemical adhesion of cerakote. Blasting was required prior to coating. Therefore, It is my opinion that some yoyo manufacturers are improperly applying the coating.

I’m pretty sure all Cerakoted yo-yos so far have been handled by a single 3rd party that specializes in Cerakote.

Edit to add: I’m not clear on whether prep requires blasting it back down to raw metal.

That trained certified cerakote applicator, may not have wanted to do the work or did not have a sand blaster. It does state that metals with a hard annodizing (type 3 assumedly) need to be blasted prior to application in the same manner as a hard chrome. Nothing stated of a normal anodizing.

Type 1 annodizing which is what is done to yo-yos and presumably your bike is very porous which is why it accepts dyes unlike a hard type three ano which is black. The surface of the yo yo prior to anodizing may have been blasted this making it even easier for cerakote to be applied.

It would most definitely chip if the base metal were dinged with enough force like an egg cracking. It actually will not scratch easily, grab a cerakoted object and try taking a metal file to it.
