throwing the cerakote still rollin today and it got me thinking about the finish. most of the info i can find pertains to its use on firearms and while i imagine most of the theory is transferable, i have a couple specific questions for you material experts out there.

1. is it annodized underneath and will it wear off over time from handling? like the cups of the still rollin are green and im curious if the whole thing gets a green anno then the cerakote gets applied on top

2. i understand cerakote is scratch resistant, is it also impact resistant too? is it more durable than regular anno, or will it just chip instead of ding?

That particular model is anodized all over underneath so when u chip/ding it, it should reveal green underneath which is cool and I wish they did that for all models like Jake does.

Also the finish itself I’d say is more fragile then normal ano but this can vary from yo-yo to yoyo, batches etc. my Lilith wizard one day had a lil chip in it and I never even dinged it on anything never hit the ground or an object or anything. I still have no clue how it happened. But aside from that none of my other cerakote yo-yos have any damage what so ever. I do baby them tho so can’t speak on it much more that. But over all I’m a fan of it. It gives yo-yos a unique play feel that I’ve come to enjoy especially on the diorama. Cerakote diorama is special

I’ve only tried 1 cerakote throw but instantly became obsessed. There should be way more cerakoted throws.

I had one tiny scratch on a cerakote kamuraiju (no idea how it got there, I only threw it a few times over a rug) it revealed some raw Al underneath.

that gave me the impression it’s fragile.

I wish that too! It sounds awesome.

Love the ceramic display piece feel that it gives. Similar to moon rock / micro arc finishes

What is the advantage of Cerakote? If it inevitably chips and cracks; what is the point of using it? I get that from a manufacturer’s perspective it allows them to sell yo-yo’s with ano-flaws; but for the consumer what is the advantage?

Speaking from experience with cerakote outside of throws, you can take a metal file to it and it won’t scratch off.

It definitely is not something that will strengthen the material underneath to protect it from dings, no coating could achieve that. Think of it more as a shell like annodizing but with strength.

There are some dope colors that you can get in cerakote but are impossible to anno. Shoutout to peptobismol pink.

I have seen what you do to your TP Hades pair. What would some Cerakoted throws look like after a bit of your 3A?

</div>

yeah I don’t know people just need to decide what they value. I play a ton of 3a and that doesn’t really bother me. I do think it is exceptionally cool when there are multiple cerakote layers so you get a sweet jawbreaker effect at chips but yeah.

depends on the yoyo like the shape would effect where the yoyo takes the damage. I imagine fine in the cup and totally torn up on the inner walls. OD doesn’t make any good yoyos for 3a tho and iirc, I think theyre the only ones using cerakote right now

Im pretty sure all cerakoted yoyos are fully anodised before being cerakoted. I think they clarified that in another thread.

You could say the same about a painted peak no? Its for aesthetics and and also the finish on these feels great!

Maybe something like the Relics, but with fully Cerakote cups?

Also apparently white is not possible with anno, so ceracote or plastic is the only durable way to do it.

Yeah maybe at first but eventually the alu underneath will get revealed. Shape just decides where that happens like if it’s concentrade in one area or more even. it doesn’t look like those relic yoyos would be able to get all the way down to the gap so there would be color in that area. If they could get all the way down then eventually all the color would be totally gone from the inside but you have to use the same pair a ton to get that to happen. Ive seen a few pairs like that though and it’s sweet.

Yeah exactly and colors where you need white to maintain a fully saturated color like the peptobismol pink and pastels. Otherwise you gotta keep the anno thin and it looks washed out vs thick and rich looking.

Generally, Cerakote “Should NOT” chip. Yes, it can scratch and wear (by design). If it does “Chip,” it is from improper application, i.e., the part had something on it, or the product was not applied or cured correctly.

It is not a “Fragile” product. It is a ceramic coating that was designed to protect its base material.

Remember this product has been around for 40 years. Working in a lot rougher conditions than we could ever possibly do in Yoyo.
