… I can get a good size slack but can not get it to go around the back without bringing the yoyo along or landing it in a trapeze.

As your TH moves across the top of the yoyo, push it a little forward, away from you.

Honestly, just watch videos of people doing it and just mimic the motion for a while. I tried having it explained to me when I was learning it, but what got it to click was just landing it one day.

Check this thread out - there were several good replies that helped the user land Brent Stole more consistently. yooldman’s video is especially helpful - pay attention to where his hands start and end.
