The **Lamina** is the first release in our new **Research and Design** lineup. It’s smooth, wide and floaty — but beneath all the fun, the Lamina was crafted as an experimental design study in weight distribution and playfeel. The community is full of these. The most iconic of them centers on the word _“floaty”_ — a term that’s notoriously hard to pin down, not just in how a yoyo plays, but in what physical features might actually produce that sensation. Designers and manufacturers we admire have chimed in from opposite sides of the aisle — and to us, the absence of conclusive agreement only makes the discourse more compelling. It’s not straightforward to define _playfeel_, either. A player’s experience of a design is so subjective that it’s hard to map that objectively onto another person’s expectations. Specifications are also imperfect descriptors here — a 67g model could very reasonably _feel_ like a 64g yoyo. 65g models can _feel_ more reluctant than heavier alternatives. We’ve heard this countless times over our years spent in design and manufacturing. ![graded-3099](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/8/9/9/8995c2f626bf55fd8980a2f920456e4fa737ca00.jpeg) Over that time, we’ve come to see playfeel more like tasting notes than a spec sheet, where many subjective descriptors _(”reluctant”, “zippy”, “agile”, “hang time”)_ can help to paint an impressionistic picture of an experience. In many of the Design Notes that we’ve published in the past, we’ve tried to bridge that gap — to provide vocabulary of what a design might feel in your hands. But without some shared baseline — both in language and in experience — it’s hard to map design variables directly to playfeel. ![graded-3117](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/3/8/f/38fd0284af87a890547b9733e12102d492089d3a.jpeg) The Lamina was created to address that. Designed intentionally with two variants — **α** and **β** — it allows players to _feel_ the difference that a subtle shift in centerweight can make, side by side. It’s also the first release under our _ **Research and Design** _ lineup — a space for experimental, potentially one-off projects and design exploration. As Coleman puts it, this is us leaning fully into the “projects” part of Atmos Projects. ![graded-3141](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/f/1/8/f1891af11b2fdad0be96a617ac895fafbe4de2f9.jpeg) Rim weight is a lot more straightforward, and more easily understood — higher rim weight generally results in a sturdier, more powerful presence and spin. Center weight and mid weight, however, requires a much subtler view. From a “minmax design” perspective, centerweight is generally seen as purposeless — even subtractive — and does not help performance in any way. Our personal stance is that weight distribution is a lot more nuanced than that, and that playfeel comes about by how the three mass categories harmonize with a design’s profile and size — each of these being vital levers for adjusting and creating a specific playfeel. ![graded-3121](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/5/9/3/593d8355a8c81039971c5725945e0ed11186b19c.jpeg) In musical terms — center weight can often feel like the missing bassline that makes an already wonderful acoustic set feel complete and whole. It’s not loud, but it has an incredibly grounding effect. When it’s missing, the musical experience feels somewhat empty. We approached the Lamina like a controlled experiment, an _A/B test_ — we fixed all design variables across the Alpha and Beta — except for center weight, where the Alphas pack an additional 1.3g in a slight dome hub. This additional mass is slight, but not insignificant — it isolates the effect of center weight as a sole variable, and allows us to observe its influence on feel. The Lamina is wide enough for this subtle difference to feel real and observable, while keeping it stable in play. ![Group 559](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex015/uploads/yoyoexpert1/original/4X/9/e/5/9e544bd969e33002fb089676c9b51d586e223698.jpeg) The goal of this project isn’t to say that a specific design or playfeel is better than the other, but to provide a reference point for their own tastes and preferences. The Lamina exists to help players understand what playfeel speaks to them, and how to recognize it when it appears. Our personal, subjective observations of the differences are as such: _ **“α / Alpha** — Domed hub, with an 1.3g of additional center weight overall. Plays more rounded, bouncy and whole. A lot more gradual and smooth on directional changes._ _ **β / Beta** — Flat hub, base weight, and rim weight is proportionately more. Plays clean, light and agile. This looks very interesting! A couple questions… 1. Why not just use SEs for this experiment and package the throw with two sets? That seems like it would functionally accomplish the same thing, would it not, if the only difference is in added center weight? 2. For the “base” lighter design, how aggressive is the rim weight distribution compared to other models in general? Not just the centerweight added version. 3. WIll these be available as a set? ---

Thanks for these! Great questions 🙂 1. SEs would work for a similar experiment, but the application of center weight would be slightly different in that scenario. Center weight would be more concentrated close to the axis, but in more general practice, center weight is distributed more evenly across a design’s hub. This more closely approximates how center weight is usually applied in the majority of yoyos, which are non-SE models – it’s more diffused, and has a different felt effect. Also not going with SE as a baseline or the crux of our experiment allows us to tinker further with other iterations in the future – possibly versions with varying mid weights, which we also feel is quite a nuanced category of mass. 2. Quite a fair bit of mass in the rim category here actually, but very evenly applied and distributed. The thought here was to keep it from being too aggressive, so we could isolate the felt effects of center weight. It’s stable and powerful enough! 3. We’re not putting these up as a set unfortunately. Across colorways and Alpha/Beta options we felt it would be best to decouple them so anyone could pick and choose whatever they wanted. ---

Lamina looks great with the shape and form factor. Two questions about it. I’m about to get a Fuji. You said how different the Alpha and Beta Lamina might feel in play. Can you tell us how the Fuji might fit in with these and how it’s either different or similar to the Laminas? Earlier with the Fuji you said there will be two more designs coming up. Are these two designs the Alpha and Beta Lamina or is one design the Lamina and there will be even another one coming up? Btw, I really love the color tones of Atmos yoyos. Look very pleasant with the hue-saturation-brightness mixes other than some odd, wild or super saturated colorways out there. ---

@Scamper I appreciate the kind words! Colors are something we work very hard on so it’s always awesome to hear they’re appreciated! Regarding the Fuji, I’d say it’s quite distinct from the Laminas. Entirely different concept. It’s a bimetal design and the specs and dimensions on it are quite different. I’d say in feel it’s a lot more solid and “consolidated”, if that makes sense. A lot more power too. Laminas are a lot floatier in play. The Laminas are not the continuation of the Fuji! I was just wondering how they were maybe feeling similar heavy or light with the weight being similar around 66.5g. And then the Beta probably a bit lighter. Or maybe it’s just different anyways because of design and shape? But I got the Fuji now and am very happy with it. Looks beautiful and is fun to play.
