Take a look at them, they’re as wide as diabolos. If you can’t land a string hit there’s gotta be sumthin wrong wit ya. String hits are so easy that it seems tricks are tending towards dynamic picture tricks with a lot of small, intricate moves.

Exploiting? Maybe.

Is using Avid to edit film cheating? Surely cutting and pasting film is the only way to go

Not all of them are really wide as diabolos. But I agree it is pretty easy for string hits

cheating would entail using something outside of the expected means of the yoyo world.

Steroids in sportsball for instance would be cheating, but using a high end bat instead of using a Kmart special would not. Putting cork in the bat? thats adding something not meant to be in the world as it was created and evolves so there is the “cheat”

If you somehow added a motor to the yoyo to keep it going period, that would be cheating due to the adding of something thats not meant to be in the yoyo world as it was exposed and evolved.

In video games, if there is a glitch that lets you move through a door your not supposed to go through yet (think SM64 speed runs beating the game with zero stars) is EXPLOITing simple errors that are already inside the game, without adding anything.
But using a game shark, or hacking codes requires the “addition” of other equipment or program.

So by having specialized shapes to facilitate the style of playing that many desire, that is simply not possible without these shapes and profiles these modern yoyos have evolved to, i could not get behind the idea that its somehow cheating.

Some may argue that bearings and response pads are an addition, but no one seems to be against these developments. Its not giving an unfair advantage, just having the right rig for the job.

You cant play tennis with a bad-mitten racket.

I’m guessing you’re just playing devil’s advocate here for the most part.

No, it isn’t cheating. The day that yoyos just do the tricks without any skill input at all - that day is the day it can be considered cheating.

I have wide yoyos, and I have thin yoyos. I’m not going to have someone suggest to me that a complicated combo I’m doing after months of practise is easy because I’m using a wide yoyo. In fact, depending on the trick elements, I can somerimes find them slightly easier on a thinner yoyo.

Shucks, busted again.

But do keep in mind that bearing yoyos were considered cheating at one time and are now pretty much the norm.

Modern yo-yos are not exactly cheating, they’re more like training wheels for folks that can’t throw real yo-yos . A guy with a space cowboy explained that to me yesterday.

Reasons that it is not cheating:

Recreationally:

“cheating” only makes sense in a system with strictly defined rules. So It’s not cheating in recreational yoyoing. As long as you are playing and having fun, your fun doesn’t hurt anyone. Fixed axle is functionally a different game from modern unresponsive yoyoing. It’s a fun game, but to say that ‘using an unresponsive yoyo is cheating’ implies that fixed axle, or responsive, or something else is the “real” way to play this silly game with no specific rule set and no specific goals… It’s a silly statement.

Competitions/contests:

YoYo’s are not all about just landing on the string. Big yoyos are harder to move around tight trick formations. By having a yoyo that is wide, you sacrifice tech. If light, you sacrifice stability. If heavy, you sacrifice speed. There are so many different axis that people will prefer different exact specs, and that is fine.

Eg, In ping pong, there is no restriction on the size or weight of the paddle, but playing with a paddle the size of a piece of paper would just be stupid.

Plus everyone can use bigger yoyo’s. You can’t edge out your opponent by going bigger, because they could go bigger, too, if the wanted.

are transaxle YoYo cheating ? answer yourself. everything else is exploiting possibilities.

are fixed axle YoYos Diavolos ? what was there first. technically they are the same. just get played different. tried both. i could diabolo with a YoYo when bearing removed or was able to yoyo with a diabolo when string attached like with YoYo.

no need to question common behaviour. Furthermore don`t insult modern throwers as not manly enoght to do tricks with a “real fixed axle YoYo”. Many tricks are not possible with fixed axle and vice versa.
