I really don’t think people understand how much planning, time, and capital is needed to release a yoyo. Capital: Lets say that the cost to manufacture a summit 2 is $60 ( I made this up). That includes just paying BT to anno, the waste of some not being up to spec, the side effects, quality control, the boxes, everything. The first run was 300, so 150 to OD and 150 to Caribou. Theoretically, with the made up amount of 60, each company had to pay $9000 to just make that run of summits. One possible reason there are “limited” and “small” and “exclusive” releases is that you have to pay that much, wait a certain amount of time, receive product, and then sell it. The problem with “just make more so it’s not exclusive” is that if OD or Caribou wants to make more, the amount of time to make them is the same, and even if Caribou and OD spent twice or three times the amount just to order them, the time to make them is the same. So we see a drop of summit 2s every 2 months it seems, if they were to stockpile 3 times the amount of summits and release them at the same time, then we’d see a release every 6 months, but it would probably be the same amount of yoyos. The issue then become OD isn’t making money stockpiling yoyos to make a huge release, which threatens their livelihood, which I would rather have them around making some of the best quality yoyos out there. Time: OD is a 2 man operation, and they have to make yoyos and sell them simultaneously to be able to do what they do full time, and not just pay the bills, but provide for their families outside of the OD. Having visited them and picked their brains about their process, it seems like they are very efficient at what they do. They try their best in designing and manufacturing yoyos that they don’t have accidental waste, and are able to put yoyos in people’s pockets. They are going to work hard and spend their time making their yoyos, but they are also going to allow margin in their lives and spend time outside of work living. Planning: With the P3AK, the prototyping was probably finished very soon, and the first batch was ordered way ahead of time. I’m not sure how long it takes to get from the day to placing an order to a manufacturer over seas to being able to sell it from the store front, but if it takes 2-3 months to do this, I can see why it seems like these take forever and seem exclusive. But the reality is that it really stinks to have a product sit on a shelf and not sell it from a financial standpoint, because if it doesn’t sell, it doesn’t make money. It’s better to have stuff sell out within a couple days, because you can use that money to reinvest into making more products. Conclusion: We have to believe the best of these people (Steve, Chris, Shawn, David) who are trying to make them at volume. There are a lot of moving parts, and being as these are small businesses, not huge corporations, they can’t operate at the level people want them to. Honestly, if it could be done in little time, if they had the money, and if they could plan like no one’s business and pretty much know the future demand of every product they sell, they would do it. They know by now the demand is high, and probably will be for a little bit longer, and they’re going to do their best to keep them available. They are not seeking to exclude, or upset, and rile up their fanbases. They like making yoyos, they want to keep doing it. They’re doing the best they can. The legacy peak is a part in this probably because OD was able to fit in batches of them as they were making other stuff, likely because they had the material ready to go, and it was a small order request. It also is supposed to be limited edition, not a production model they plan on having on the shelf indefinitely. ---

Well said Josh. Not everyone has been lucky enough to peek behind the curtain. It is finely tuned and well oiled machine that makes these yoyos, and it is pretty much working at max capacity at all times. Even when you do something fun like make yoyos for a living, you still have to live your life outside of work. ---

normally i’d be all over this but the shopify ToS states they’ll collect and profile you based off your purchase data regardless of whether you have an account or not, just purchasing through a shopify storefront (regardless of payment method) will do this ---

This tells me one thing. Our community is growing. There are more people than there have ever been competing to get these things. And I personally think that is awesome. Share the love. If you don’t get the one you want from a drop, spend some time in the community and find one later. Even the things you never thought you would see will come up for sale eventually. You’re right, they didn’t vanish in the first minute. I just wasn’t around when they dropped, and by the time I checked a day or so later they were gone. My point was more that even the cheaper releases sell out a lot faster than they used to. Like LouVanLanning said, that’s a good sign the community is growing. It’s also something worth keeping an eye on. I love yo-yos, but I don’t want to become a hypebeast just to get a fun engraved throw. I’ve watched that happen with baseball cards and TCGs, and Gunpla went the same way. Once the chase becomes the whole point, the fun goes out of it. Not trying to crap on OD or CLYW, though. washyjoshe did a good job explaining why small runs make sense for them. They do their thing, and if I can grab something I will, and if I miss it, no big deal. But I don’t keep shelf queens. Everything I own gets played, so lately I’ve been buying more from brands I can actually get my hands on without camping on a drop. There’s plenty of fun stuff out there that’s just sitting in stock. ---

OTOH, CLYW may have a few “halo” colorways.
