Not anymore, but I did for a while. Had a ‘66 Sporty chop, zx12r, and before that a handful of mopeds. These days it’s too sketchy around where I live. Saw too many friends laid out on the pavement to want to keep doing it personally. I love those old mopeds. My first motorized two wheeler was an old Puch Maxi. It couldn’t really hold anything more than 20mph so I mostly used it to go to the neighborhood coffee shop, but it was great fun. I know that there are many manufacturers making Vespa style scooters nowadays, but it would be fun to see someone make a true moped style vehicle with more modern specs. ---

Tomos continued making mopeds in Slovenia until 2019! They got pretty modern in their later years. I had a Targa LX for a while that was really fun. Two speed auto transmission and a 75cc top end kit. Would do 50mph on a good day. There is a whole community of people who ride, fix, and modify old 2 stroke mopeds. There is an aftermarket parts site called Treats that sells pretty much everything you need to make one stupid and dangerous. ---

Always been fascinated with spinning wheels 😁 To the extent that Mum has told me that as a toddler, I used to stand on the street corner quivering in excitement when I could hear bikes approaching. Took on a motorcycle mechanic apprenticeship in my early 20’s. Old school wrecker mechanic. Best (ok, one of the) thing I ever did. Never felt like work, just hanging with mate and playing with bikes. Taught me the art of get the bigger hammer! Once qualified was ready for a new challenge, so cleared out a corner of his workshop, started making small contributions to rent and built this beauty! Bike on the back is a xl100 frame with a worked xr200 engine shoehorned in. Elsinore tank I think, custom everything else. It ripps! Took is all over Oz for the next 5 years, running used cooking oil as fuel. Spent more on jerry cans for the bike and boat than on diesel for the 4.5t LandCruiser! (Under 2k in five years of full time travel) Still got plenty of bikes (7 or 8 at last count) but nothing road registered anymore, mostly just noodle about our 50 acres with the boys (all 3 of us on the dt175, Asia style!) Currently fixing up one of my old Z50 monkey bikes with the 7yo. I owe a lot to motorcycles. They have given me the skills and confidence to do all sorts of cool things in life, the latest (and ongoing) being knocking together this fine residence, all from timber felled and milled on our block. This image is probably older than most of your parents, lol This is an image of me, sitting on a 48 Panhead that I built/finished in 1974. Which no matter how you cut it, was 52 years ago. I’ve been messing with Harley’s for a long, long, long time. I am retiring effectively at the end of this month. Next Friday will be my last day. I’m sure my wife is gonna have a whole list of stuff that I just have to do in a New York minute, lol But the first time I’m going to do is to start building my next project bike… A 1952 Harley Panhead. I don’t know about the rest of the country because I don’t travel much? But I do know here in Southern California, there’s a whole lot of people in cars and trucks that seem to have a very negative view of two wheeled objects and literally seemed to forget that there are human beings sitting on them. A lot of bikers get knocked out of commission by people that for whatever reason we go out of their way to rattle a biker‘s cage. So once I get my next bike up, I’m probably not gonna do any long riding. I’ll just probably stay local and just practice the defensive awareness that I developed over the last half century. Trust me I’m not exaggerating. I’ve also noticed that things have gotten a lot worse since the increase of E bikes on the road. A good number of people on E bikes for whatever reason, totally disregard road manners. They shoot out into the street against red lights… They cut in and out of traffic and people can’t even hear them so when they shoot by scare the beans out of people basically. They try to take over intersections and actually do down in my neck of the woods. The police don’t seem to do anything. Because if you have 35 people on E bikes taken over first and Gaffy and two cop cars show up, the biker spread out in all directions and the cops know at the very most they’re only gonna catch two of them. So that hate carries over to all people on two wheels. Since I’ve been driving to Los Angeles five days a week for the last 33 years, you can trust me on this… I seen a good number of cars deliberately go out of their way to try to take a biker out. In a way it’s kind of unbelievable. Because it seems like they’re not even thinking of any consequences if the biker goes down and maybe gets killed or just broken into pieces. The car or SUV turns into a 2 ton weapon. And since on a motorcycle, the biker is the windshield, it’s not much of a match. Anyway, when this image was taken, there wasn’t even a law in California that you had to wear a helmet. You could just cruise around real nice people would like the bikes, honk or wave and smile and you could roll down the street without anybody trying to take you out. That custom build looks like an incredible amount of work, props for doing everything by hand and keeping the R3 as a fun stock ride. ---
