I don’t agree with that at all. Changing the design is proposing a higher performing Peak, whether it’s being framed that way or not. Sounds like you’re coat riding and twisting things. When you alter the shape, proportions, and intent to make it more stable (which is pretty clear) or modern, you’re inherently prioritizing performance over the original feel.

Saying the Peak was “high performance for its time” doesn’t cancel out the fact that it was, and still is, floaty, fun, and expressive by today’s standards which is what everyone wants. Both of those things can be true at the same time, so your argument makes no sense.

Literally all the community is asking for is as close to a 1:1 as possible, and CLYW refuses to listen. It’s not rocket science.

Sorry to say it, but it’s never everyone, and I’m sure that CLYW knows it. It is impossible to appease everyone. Steve himself said that they did their best to weigh in the demands of longtime fans without closing off what they themselves wanted to do. And I’m cool with that. I’m not sure it’s fair to feel upset for a group of creative designers wanting to be creative while trying to preserve what they have already done. I think they did a great job, and like @SlowThrow I will be throwing a Beater to see if I want to try a P3AK one day

At this point it just feels like nitpicking wording instead of engaging with the actual point. It makes NO sense to produce something with the Peak name if it doesn’t play like an original Peak. That name comes with very specific expectations around feel and character.

If the goal is performance or a modern reinterpretation, that’s totally fine. Just make it a different throw. I’m not going to keep going back and forth on semantics

Some thoughts on why I don’t feel the peak should be re-run:

The first run peaks mostly weren’t quite machined as Chris originally intended. The second run was a new file, to be smoother and more uniform in production. The third run was arguably what the first run was supposed to be, with updated, consistent machining.

Older throws like the 888 and the Peak varied from run to run, with people preferring different runs for their own reasons. Even if you could run the original file for the Peak with a modern machine shop, you wouldn’t get a 1:1 re-production of the OG peak.

If they re-run anything it should be the third run, but YYF recently re-ran the 888 and Superstar, and they didn’t seem to sell out super quickly.

The appeal of the first run peaks isn’t just about how they play or feel - it’s about the look, the moment they captured. A reproduction simply isn’t going to be the same thing.

I’ll pick up a P3ak (if Steve produces the niche colour I requested), and it’ll be like the plastic peak - fun, and building on what came before it (which is what the OG peak did with the Hitman and 401k anyway). My first run peak is my favourite yoyo of all time, and I truly wish there were more out there, but to re-run it feels like it risks diluting the legacy of what the first run was.

at what point does clyw get to make the yoyo _they_ want to make with their company? they aren’t bound to make what anyone wants and let’s be real, you might be mad and opt out, but we all know p3ak is gonna fly off the shelf regardless of fans of the og not getting what they want

Mann this feels like such a lame argument to me but is probably pretty similar to the reasoning CLYW used for not doing another run.

Also I think with modern machining and scanning we could get a pretty accurate recreation of any of the runs.

Lmao right? This is a weak excuse and it’s flat out wrong. “Runs” are intentional design revisions, not random machining inconsistencies. If you machine from the same CAD file, you get the same result every time, especially with modern CNC equipment.

So saying the Peak can’t be recreated because of run variation doesn’t make much sense. The real difference between runs was design intent, not some unknowable machining magic. These excuses are getting silly at this point.

Just being bluntly honest.

When I say “the machine shop took some liberties” what I mean is they made changes to the file that Chris never saw or approved. So what he ordered wasn’t what he got. Second run was changed based on him trying to approximate the changes that the shop made from the first run, so _personally_ I feel like the 2nd Run Peak is kinda where it’s at anyway. But funny thing about the history of Caribou Lodge, everyone has their own moment that is definitively **IT** to them.

A few folks seem super pissed off about this, which is totally their right. Caribou is doing what Caribou has always done, which is the best we can with very limited time and resources. If we’re able to produce something that speaks to you and makes you happy, fantastic. If not, there are plenty of other companies. Or start your own! That’s how we ended up here in the first place, being discontent with what was available. Honestly, someone being annoyed that we aren’t making what they want and then starting their own company to do it themselves is probably the highest compliment we could imagine.

_(As long as you aren’t planning to just knock off Peaks, though. That would be weird.)_

And this is exactly the issue. This attitude is what’s been pushing longtime customers away for years. Dismissing consistent feedback as nostalgia, or responding with “go buy something else” instead of actually engaging, is not listening nor is it a good look for any company.

People aren’t upset because they hate change. However, they’re upset because the things that made them loyal keep getting brushed aside, while legacy names are still being used to draw people in for profit. At some point that stops feeling like creative direction and starts feeling like ignoring your own customer base as well as your roots as a company.

I’m just one guy, but I’ve been around since the first Peak dropped, and I’ve talked to a lot of people over the years who feel the same way. This sentiment isn’t new and it isn’t uncommon.

MANY people are willing to pay upwards of $500-$1k to get the feel for a peak so why wouldn’t you take the time to re release it?

And I agree, the second and third runs were my favorites. But even without original files, it’s extremely common and honestly trivial to scan or precisely measure a yoyo and reverse engineer something that’s nearly 1:1. I work in aerospace and this is done all the time with parts that are far more complex than a yoyo.

The ENTIRE CLYW brand was built upon expressive and fun play, not ultimate stage performance yo-yos, this is a fact even if some yo-yos happened to perform well for the time. So to a lot of people it feels like abandoning what made CLYW great and it’s offensive when so many people express this and get brushed off with excuses.

People like me speak up because we genuinely love the brand. We’re not asking to dictate design choices. We just miss what CLYW used to offer and want to see that spirit revived.

But, clearly y’all don’t want to hear anything out, and don’t care what long time fans want so my rant is over. Good luck.

say no more, x-ray the og peak is the key without doing a sacrificial half cut of the metal then you can slowly micro measure the design one by one.

I think you are mistaking me wanting things to _play better_ with “ultimate stage performance”, which is probably a communication gap on my side. Apologies for that. Unless it’s a signature model for a team member who really, really wants that, or the Klondike (which was meant to be our one broad kinda contest throw), I really don’t give a rip about contest performance. I was never a contest player, Chris was never a contest player, unless it’s specifically making our team happy it’s not our focus at all. When I’m talking about the Peak 2 or the P3AK playing better, I’m talking about what most people would consider hilariously inadequate improvements by contest standards. If you have taken my comments to think that we’re chasing some kind of performance ghost, I’ve communicated very, very poorly. I would hope that a few minutes playing with a Beater would illustrate how non-seriously I take “high performance play” when it comes to yoyos. I’m genuinely sorry if I’ve given the idea that this is what we’re chasing.

What we’re after is just constant improvement. The Peak 2 (as illustrated in the cut videos linked above) is barely different from the 2nd run, but the changes were made because we thought we could inch the design forward a little. Make it a little easier to produce, change up the way it feels to freshen it up, make it play a little lighter and smoother. The P3AK is the same thing, only think of it more like one of those movie franchises where they retcon everything and pretend earlier sequels didn’t happen….we started with the original Peak and then worked forward from there.

I get that all you want is an affordable original Peak, exact same specs, that you can beat the crap out of and not worry about the value. If we ever decide to do that, I’ll send you one for free. But I think discounting the P3AK because you don’t like us moving forward is a weird way to say you love the brand.

I am gonna send that x-ray to Chris through. Bet he’ll get a kick out of it. Not sure the distortion is gonna make it particularly useful but it’s still pretty cool.
