Hey everyone,

Lately I’ve been working on playing with some design in CAD, a few ideas I’ve been kicking around. I had a few questions for other designers out there that I’m hoping someone might be able to answer:

1. One of my designs I’m working on implementing Side Effects. I was wondering if anyone had the dimensions for the side effects type hub available, or even better, a CAD template
2. On the question of Side Effects, does anyone know if it would be theoretically be possible to use these with a plastic design? I’ve never seen it done before, and I was wondering why.
3. Another material I’ve been playing with is SS - does anyone know the minimum recommended thickness for SS in yoyos? I’ve found info for aluminum and Ti, but SS is harder to find info on

Thanks for any answers you can give!

Re SE with plastic:

> [@One Drop YoYos Official News](https://forums.yoyoexpert.com/t/one-drop-yoyos-official-news/43021/2410):
>
> Related to OD, I think this might be a 3D printed SE on a 3D printed Deep State tribute (produced by YOYOMAKER with OD’s permission). Not sure about the SE material, but the yo-yos are printed in two methods to achieve different weight balances.

You can see in the responses that SEs are not ideal and Cabal guts are the recommended OD option for plastic.

Re SS thickness:

> [@Yoyo CAD & Prototyping Adventures](https://forums.yoyoexpert.com/t/yoyo-cad-prototyping-adventures/291547/1806):

Minimum I would go for SS is 0.8mm
Edit: The post above which I didn’t see has better info

SE with plastics…

> [@One Drop YoYos Official News](https://forums.yoyoexpert.com/t/one-drop-yoyos-official-news/43021/2420):
>
> It works until you tighten the yoyo just a bit too hard. Cabal guts are not only cheaper than side effects but work much better for the purpose intended, leading to a more durable yoyo.

Contrary to popular opinion, SE can be overnighted. I’ve got AL throws were the clamping force is starting to “bite” into the seat. Under low magnification you can see that the bearings inner race is cutting away at the seat. If this were plastic, it would have cracked long ago.

You could also use Freshly Dirty’s Stem System, which they have CAD files for

</div>

Thanks for the info everyone! I guess I’ll just stick with SEs on the metal throw. I did look at the Stem System also, but part of the attraction with the SEs is being able to modify the weight of the yoyo. I guess for plastics it would be a good alternative at least.

Now just to find the dimensions for SEs…

One Drop posted the side effects DXF on facebook. This is a mirror of it.

Look for this area:

Also just a heads up but not all ti is equal. Grade 2 has to be a bit thicker than grade 5.

Do not use this for plastic, you’ll want to use cabal guts instead:

Stem system focuses on being able to change the bearing size instead of the weight which makes a throw feel drastically different.

I trust your guidance and advice more than anyone for yoyo design but unfortunately I have this thing where if someone tells me not to do something I’ve gotta do it. You have activated my Manchurian Candidate code word and now I must endeavor to fail :joy: and find out why it won’t work first hand. Probably repeatedly. It’s a real problem sometimes.

Yoyo expert also sells all sorts of yoyofactory spacers that work great for 3d printed plastics. Just printed this guy today

3Deep, FWIW. Doesn’t feel particularly vulnerable to over tightening, but I can believe
it is more so than metal.
